Job description
This position comes with a mixture of administrative, secretarial and technical responsibilities. The Law Clerk will be working directly with the lawyer on personal injury and employment law matters, including motor vehicle accidents, slip and falls, long-term disability, accident benefits, and wrongful dismissal claims. The ideal candidate will be someone who takes initiative, is detail-oriented, organized, and possesses strong communication skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assisting lawyer in prosecuting civil litigation matters
- Assisting with new client screening and intake
- Regularly following up with clients, and answering their calls as needed
- Managing various aspects of SABS claims (i.e, OCF-1, OCF-3, LAT filings, etc.)
- Scheduling meetings and calls.
- Obtaining productions from clients and various third parties
- Preparing and reviewing affidavits of documents
- Answering undertakings
- Preparation of pleadings
- Managing various limitations and timelines
- Assisting with Court Filings
- Assisting with motions, mediations, and pre-trials
- Assisting with preparation for trial or hearings
Skills and Specifications
- Preference will be given to Applicants with 3+ years of experience in accident benefits and tort claims.
- Must be able to work well independently with little supervision as well as being a productive member of a team.
- Excellent multi-tasking and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Meeting of tight timelines.
- Critical thinking and analysis.
- Show discretion and good judgment in dealing with sensitive and confidential information.
- Showing sensitivity and empathy towards the firm’s injured clients
- Knowledge of SABS and Rules of Civil Procedure
Education and Qualifications
- Post-secondary education
- Completion of a Law Clerk or Paralegal program is an asset
- Computer literate, with strong skills in the use of MS Office, e-mail, and the internet. Knowledge and familiarity with legal accounting and file management systems an asset.
