Summary of the Position

Future North / Futur du Nord is a youth-led collective impact initiative in the process of becoming a non-profit organization. As a collective, we are making strides in youth leadership and youth-led programming within the District of Sudbury-Manitoulin.

The Interim Program Director role is responsible for leading and managing Future North / Futur du Nord’s Strategic Plan in collaboration with the Leadership Table (LT) / Board of Directors and Future North Youth Expert Panel through the established By-Laws, Terms of Reference and policies set by the agency’s (LT) / Board of Directors. As a leader, the Program Director models and promotes excellence, accountability, quality, creativity, transparency, anti-oppressive practices, and empathy throughout the agency. The Program Director plays a direct role in developing and managing relationships with key stakeholders, including businesses, donors and other charities as well as youth within the community. Accountable to a volunteer (LT) / Board of Directors, the Program Director will represent and champion the organization in the community and will be responsible for leveraging agency resources and the Future North / Futur du Nord brand to raise the profile of youth engagement and youth leadership in the District of Sudbury-Manitoulin.

Primary Role and Responsibility

Your primary role is to manage the implementation of Future North / Futur du Nord’s Strategic Business Plan and to seek out opportunities to sustain the work of the organization beyond the current funding term with the Federal government. A key responsibility is establishing and maintaining relationships with potential sponsors in the corporate and non-profit sectors, and with political, education, and youth-driven community groups for the advancement of the organization. Additionally, you will lead the initiative through the transitional period as Future North becomes established as a non-profit agency.

Accountability / Reporting

The Interim Program Director is accountable to the Future North / Futur du Nord Leadership Table for the success of the organization and reports to the Co-chairs of the Leadership Table and its Executive Committee.

Qualifications (General)

Dedicated to improving outcomes for youth, you have 4 to 5 years of experience in a community non-profit organization, government agency, or similar organization, with up to 2 years at a senior or management level. Your knowledge of issues related to youth engagement and disengagement as well as a passion for supporting youth is a key requisite for this position. You have exceptional presentation skills combined with an ability to prioritize and delegate tasks to meet project objectives and deadlines. You have the ability to manage multiple demands and priorities in a context of change and ambiguity, and an ability to adapt to changing needs or momentum. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Experience in grant writing and fundraising is an asset. Must be comfortable with technology and proficient in using Microsoft Office and excel.

Qualifications (Academic)

Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Human Resources/Social Services/Business/Communications/ Social Work or a related field is required.

Key Responsibilities

1) Support the Board / Leadership Table

● Work with the board and committees to organize and follow up on all meetings

● Provide reports to the board that ensure compliance with all of their legal and fiduciary duties, including charitable filings

● Act as a professional advisor to the board on all aspects of the organization’s activities

● Identify, assess and inform the board of internal and external issues that may affect the agency

● Prepare and present proposals and plans to the board for review, discussion and approval with respect to any potential, new initiative that would help the agency achieve its mission, vision and goals

● Support the board in developing and regularly reviewing board and organizational policies and procedures

● Act as liaison between staff and board, fostering positive relations and a clear understanding of the respective roles and responsibilities

● Ensure board members receive a comprehensive orientation to the agency

● Support the Leadership Table through the transitional period as Future North becomes established as a non-profit agency.

2) Implement Long-Term Vision and Strategic Goals

● Collaborate with the board to continue to develop a long-term vision and strategic goals, incorporating feedback from staff and stakeholders including youth

● Based on input from the board, develop the long-term financial plan for the agency

● Implement the plan and monitor progress towards vision and goals. Recommend changes to the plan, as necessary

3) Plan and Manage Programs and Operations

● Ensure implementation and effective execution of agency programs in accordance with agency policies

● Prepare, monitor, and be accountable for the annual agency operating plan and budget, based on the strategic plan

● Ensure policies and procedures are in place for effective fiscal management and oversight

● Establish mechanisms for evaluating agency programs on a regular basis

● Regularly monitor revenues and expenditures against budget and adjust as necessary

● Identify, assess, and manage all risks to the agency

● Optimize the use of technology to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of program delivery and operations

4) Manage Human Resources

● Recruit and hire qualified staff and ensure proper screening

● Oversee and direct the implementation of HR policies and procedures

● Ensure all new staff are oriented and trained to perform their duties

● Implement the performance management process that includes updated job descriptions, annual work plans, ongoing monitoring and an annual performance review according to the agency’s established HR manual

● Ensure on-going training and professional development opportunities are made available to staff

● Establish clear patterns of authority, responsibility, supervision and communication with staff

● Establish a positive, inclusive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations

5) Generate Revenue

● Create an annual fund development plan linked to the operating budget, with clear targets and actions, and a diversity of funding sources

● Define the case for support for both donors and funders

● Identify funding programs for which the agency is eligible and prepare applications

● Research innovative practices in fundraising and assess applicability to the agency

● Ensure existing donors are appropriately recognized and stewarded

6) Oversee Communications and Marketing of the Agency

● Raise visibility and promote the services of the agency

● Ensure compliance with the Future North / Futur du Nord brand

● In conjunction with the Board Chair, act as the agency’s key spokesperson and representative to the community, government, and media

7) Engage Community

● Ensure the organization builds and sustains relationships with young people, families, volunteers, donors, funders, government representatives, politicians, and other community- based agencies to help achieve the agency’s mission and goals

● Explore and where feasible, build strategic partnerships that will advance the interests of the agency

● Work positively and collaboratively with other agencies in the mentoring program

Abilities:To perform this job successfully, the candidate must be able to demonstrate functionality in most or all of the key responsibilities. The individual must be an energetic self-starter who is able to function comfortably in a team environment or independently. The Executive Director is someone who relates well to co-workers and the public. This position requires flexibility and the ability to manage time and multiple tasks with little supervision. The individual must also effectively promote and value diversity, inclusion and equity in the workplace and community at large.

Demands of this Position:Must be able to assume a wide range of responsibilities including working with staff and volunteers who vary in their work styles and the individual must be able to work efficiently. The individual must be willing to work irregular hours, extra hours, evenings or weekends as necessary. The individual must be able to provide timely responses to requests and deadlines.

Work Environment:The primary location of this position is temporarily remote, however, the responsibilities may require meetings or events outside the office. The employee must possess a Class-G license and access to a reliable vehicle.

Confidentiality:Employees must follow and adhere to all confidentiality and privacy requirements as per agency policies and practices.

Job Performance Evaluation: The employee will be evaluated annually by the Board of Directors, and more often if performance warrants.

Additional Requirements:Successfully pass a Vulnerable Sector Police Check

Job Types: Full-time, 12-month contract

Salary: $65,000.00-$72,000.00 per year

Schedule:

● Monday to Friday

● Occasional evenings or weekends to suit demands of the role (with flex time)
