Position Overview

The Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institutein the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for an Impact & Knowledge Mobilization, Project Manager, One Child Every Child.This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

In 2023, the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) invested $125 million in University of Calgary’s One Child Every Child: A Transformational Child Health Research Initiative. This ground-breaking initiative will transform child health research in Canada, promote Indigenous-led knowledge creation and self-determination, and drive discovery and innovation. It will bring together researchers, community partners, health-care providers, equity deserving groups, educators, trainees, stakeholders and indigenous communities to build the foundation for global excellence and leadership in research to enable every child and community to thrive. Located in the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) at the University of Calgary, the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) is embarking on the implementation of One Child Every Child (OCEC) Scientific Strategy Plan to improve the lives of children across Canada and beyond.

Reporting to the Scientific Director, Evaluation, Impact and Partnership, ACHRI.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Operational Planning and Program Management

  • Manage the coordination and linkages between a vast number of interdependent projects (One Child Every Child Themes and Accelerators)

  • Monitor the Impact and KM Accelerator Budget

  • Independently manage project schedules, resources and processes

  • Facilitate the development of necessary contracts for projects/programs

  • Lead the development and management of multiple projects and initiatives with overlapping deadlines and priorities

  • Build relationships with key project teams, external partners (University, Community)

  • Facilitating success of programs to ensure strategic priorities are met. This will include development and implementation of program frameworks, policies and procedures, prioritization, evaluation and governance, with a responsibility to continuously assess and improve

  • Provide managerial leadership and ensure appropriate measures are in place with regard to project management, reporting on progress of projects jointly conducted with other stakeholder organizations

Communication and Relationships

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders

  • Serve as a key project contact for the Impact and KM accelerator within One Child Every Child with internal and external stakeholders and ensure they are informed of progress, risks, dependencies and changes in the execution of the research plan

  • Development and progression of strategic partnerships, including the identification of new partners and maintenance of existing relationships

  • Participate in the ACHRI scientific committee, the themes and accelerators working groups

  • Manage relationships and ensure deliverables are provided as specified

  • Develop guidelines for appropriate use of systems outputs and reports

  • Assists with preparation of scientific posters, abstracts, manuscripts and presentations

Staff Management

  • Serve as a liaison, leader and role model for the Impact and Knowledge Mobilization Accelerator within the larger One Child Every Child context, fostering a team-based culture, ensuring positive interactions with other team members and collaborators

  • Provide leadership and direction to staff by managing tasks and duties, supporting and facilitating training and career development, mentoring, monitoring progress and reviewing performances

  • Responsible for the development of job descriptions, interviewing and hiring of new staff, contract renewal, verification of timesheets, training, workflow analysis

  • Complete performance evaluations and follow up accordingly including performance management, discipline, and termination as required

  • Develop and foster working relationships with team members (clinic staff, analysts, program developers and others)

  • Creates a culture within the team that enables and promotes continual improvement

  • Mentor and train staff members

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master Degree, MBA an asset
  • 5-7 year’s experience project and/or program management
  • Experience supervising and leading a complex team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with senior leaders to foster collaborative research activities
  • Experience creating an actionable project plan and working with team member to execute according to timelines and deliverables
  • Experience facilitating a large group of collaborators and researchers with competing interests and priorities
  • Experience managing and direct large-scale research projects
  • Proven ability to work independently and effectively problem solve
  • Flexible and adaptable to project needs
  • Develops productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, clients, peers and colleagues, to understand priorities, collaborate on innovation development initiatives, track and communicate returns, explain evaluation approaches, models and results, and facilitate the management of project/initiative deliverables
  • Ability to serve as the primary liaison on a research project/program engaging with academic partners, including universities, community partners, government bodies
  • Proven ability to develop internal and external collaborations
  • Strong writing skills with ability to write internal Institute operational documents; experience writing peer-reviewed research publications is useful
  • Proven ability to facilitate strategic visioning and implement strategic plans
  • Experience with financial planning and budget management
  • Experience with the University or unionized environment or AHS is an asset
