COVE, the Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship, is a collaborative facility on the Halifax harbour for applied innovation and commercialization in the ocean sector. COVE is seeking a Financial Analyst to work in a fast-paced and cooperative team environment in which you are challenged to think of new ways to do things. The Financial Analyst will assist with internal and external financial reporting, as well as provide high quality detailed analysis to assist Management in their decision-making processes. You are a motivated and pro-active individual, who enjoys telling the story in the data and loves to analyze numbers, prepare reports, and present findings. You ask great questions, probe to understand, and are a creative thinker who enjoys sharing your insight, recommendations, and ideas.

You have an ability to communicate complex ideas in succinct and compelling ways. You are self-motivated and result-oriented, while upholding honesty and integrity without compromising attention to detail. Professionalism, initiative, work ethic, output quality, and the ability to meet deadlines are of prime importance in this energetic environment. Strong interpersonal, communication and critical-thinking skills are essential as is confidentiality and the ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Financial reporting including preparing quarterly and year-end financial statements, budget to actual variance analysis and forecasting revenue and expenses.
  • Analysis of program budgets and funding opportunities. Providing advice and guidance to program managers.
  • Preparing budgets and long-term financial plans ensuring proper financial data is available to support evidence-based decision making.
  • Preparing project budgets for COVE programs ensuring appropriate return on investment and forecasting scenarios.
  • Keeping financial records up to date, preparing reports, and completing month end procedures.
  • Processing business transactions like purchase orders, payables and receivables, disbursements, expense vouchers and receipts.
  • Preparing and distributing customer invoices, entering information into the accounts receivable sub-ledger, and performing monthly account reconciliations. Distributing statements to customers and monitoring customer accounts for payment.
  • Checking, verifying, and processing invoices, preparing cheques and wire transactions for approval, and maintaining vendor files.
  • Providing assistance and support to COVE personnel for all travel, expense claims, corporate credit card balancing and financial matters.
  • Preparing claims and/or financial reports to funders for special projects and programs.
  • Processing payroll on a biweekly basis including onboarding new employees in the payroll system and calculating benefits as required, collecting, confirming and processing timesheets, reconciling payroll subledger to the general ledger, reconciling payroll taxes, issuing Records of employment and processing employee changes and terminations.
  • Completing year end procedures, preparing working papers, issuing T4’s and liaising with external auditors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience
  • Proficiency in Windows OS and MS Office Suite programs, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Thrives in a fast paced, challenging, and ever changing environment with a commitment to achieving results and achieving deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Professional attitude with a strong work ethic and ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Strong organizational skills with an ability to prioritize and multi-task and ability to adapt to changing priorities, problem solve and be efficient in a fast-paced environment is a must.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, with an aptitude for numbers.
  • Ability to act responsibly and ethically when working with sensitive financial information, whether it is company or personal information with the ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.

  • Direct experience working in the ocean technology or marine sector
