JOB INFORMATION:

College of the North Atlantic has undertaken a major applied research initiative with its Hyperspectral Scanning Unit (HSU) in support of mineral exploration and mining operations in Canada. The Hyperspectral Scanning Unit is aimed at the analysis of geological materials (e.g., drill core, cuttings, mine walls), and large amounts of materials from various historical deposits available for study from the provincial core storage facilities, as well as from industrial partners. To grow the team, we are seeking a Faculty Researcher to join the HSU to develop and deploy advanced hyperspectral technology in support of mining industry innovation.

DUTIES: The Faculty Researcher, working under the supervision of the Director of Industry Innovation, will have a strong background in both geology and hyperspectral imaging with particular emphasis on close-range measurements (proximal sensing) for the analysis of geological materials (samples, drill core, mine wall) for the mineral resources sector. This is primarily an applied research-focused position with anticipated industrial applications, scientific outreach, and conference participation. Outreach and networking with key industry, government, and academic partners will also be required. The researcher will be responsible for the design and on-going execution of applied R&D and innovation projects including problem identification; development of project plans and schedules; proposal writing; project initiation, workflow, monitoring and control; and project closeout. The researcher will provide guidance to College students and others who may be hired to carry out research projects. A strong understanding of the role of applied research at Canadian colleges is vital to the position. Travel within the country, and potentially internationally, will be required.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must have a demonstrated knowledge of hyperspectral imaging systems and proficiency using techniques, algorithms, and spectroscopic analysis methods required for hyperspectral image processing relating to obtaining mineralogy, mineral chemistry, or other physio-chemical parameters in geological materials. Proficiency in the development and/or use of software for hyperspectral data analysis, and familiarity with the use of hardware for hyperspectral data acquisition are also required. Well-developed oral and written communication, team-building, and project management skills, combined with the ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships, are essential.

The required knowledge and skills would normally be acquired through completion of at least a Master’s Degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, Imaging Spectroscopy or a related field supplemented with a strong background in mineral resources with proven expertise in hyperspectral analysis of geological materials. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A Ph.D is preferred.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience in accordance with the College of the North Atlantic Faculty Collective Agreement.

College of the North Atlantic is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

The successful candidate will be required to provide a recent Certificate of Conduct.
