SEM-Hatch is a joint venture between Hatch Ltd. and Sikumiut Environmental Management Ltd. providing engineering, construction and project management services in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador. SEM-Hatch is performing Engineering and Project Management Services for the Voisey’s Bay Mine Expansion project. Our client has started the construction phase of two underground mines.

This mine expansion project is expected to produce about 40,000 tonnes of nickel per year and extend the life of the Voisey’s Bay operation until at least 2032. We are interested in receiving applications for Estimators. Typically, work will be from Hatch Ltd’s St. John’s office on a 40-hour M-F work week and some rotational site travel will be required to Voisey’s Bay Mine Expansion project site near Nain Labrador. The estimator will report the Engineering Manager in the home office of St. John’s.

Key Responsibilities
  • Estimate the impact of ECNs, Trends and Potential Trends to the estimate at complete for both engineering and construction costs.
  • Prepare estimates for field engineering changes that can used to corroborate contractor proposals;
  • Delivery of an accurate and comprehensive estimate in accordance with estimating procedures, standards and practices and following the project procedures;
  • Calculation of direct and indirect field costs form a first principle basis, factorization or activity based as applicable for type of estimate;
  • Attendance at the estimate and contractor review meetings;
  • Able to determine BOM if needed.
Qualifications
  • Post secondary education in a related field combined with 5+ years’ experience in various estimating methods used on capital projects
  • Experience in preparing estimates and BOE in industry standards
  • Able to negotiate and defend estimate with contractors
  • Able to read and decipher IFC dwgs/or revisions and determine material, labour and equipment requirement and align the contract documents as such
  • Able to layout and execute strategy for the scope of work
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other depts (construction, contracts etc) with any requirements or presentation of estimate
  • Strong MS Office skills and experience with tools and estimating systems
  • Experience working on a remote site would be an asset
  • Commercial/ contractual knowledge preferred
  • Other related duties as required
