Job Description:
We are looking for a Chief People Officer (CPO) who will lead the development and execution of the World Vision Canada (WVC) people strategy in support of the mission, vision, values, and strategic and annual operating plans of the organization. This broad role provides leadership and direction in the areas of talent/capabilities strategy, succession planning, change management, organizational and employee experience, learning and development, organizational culture, among others. We have made significant progress on our multi-year Agile journey organization wide. We are looking for a leader who is excited by this transformation and understands the value of creating an organization that is focused, serves and empowers teams, learns fast, and is digital at the core.

The CPO provides strategic leadership by articulating organizational needs and opportunities to the leadership team and holds oversight responsibility for all human resources-related activities in Canada. The CPO will build, develop, and coach a high-performing People and Culture (P&C) team to deliver against organizational objectives.

The CPO is a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and must be an experienced and effective servant leader with excellent people skills, strong business acumen, an exemplary work ethic, with values fully aligned with those of World Vision, including our Christian faith and calling. The CPO reports to the President and CEO, with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Duties and Responsibilities:
Senior Leadership Accountabilities
World Vision is a Christian relief, development and advocacy organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. A position at the SLT level at World Vision Canada comes with additional responsibilities in providing leadership of our common Christian ministry of following Jesus in service to the poor and oppressed. In particular this means: (a) modeling Christian servant leadership to staff, active participation and leadership in devotions and the organization’s spiritual life, and actively communicating World Vision’s Christian identity and commitments; and (b) personally exhibiting the highest standards of Christian behaviour, personal values and integrity in a way that aligns with and supports our Core Values and Christian identity.

Specific Areas of Accountability:
Strategy and Planning
  • Actively participate in the strategic planning process for the organization.
  • Provide recommendations on effective and sustainable talent management and organization design to support the over-arching strategy in alignment with our Transformation Office.
  • Partner with leaders and teams to support the priorities of the organization’s strategic and annual operating plans.
  • Lead the P&C team in the creation of the team’s vision, strategy and planning to support the execution of the organization’s plans.
  • Define, capture and rely on people analytics to identify trends in the creation of strategy, and to measure and recalibrate activities.
Support for Organizational Change
  • Contribute to ongoing organizational transformation by ensuring needed P&C elements are embedded with a primary focus on creating an innovative and agile environment and healthy culture.
  • Provide leadership and consulting to the SLT to support success with change initiatives.
  • Coach the P&C team to support and drive strategic goals, including in the P&C team.
  • Continuously evolve people and leadership practices in designing a culture that values and creates the conditions for a feedback-rich, high-performance culture.
  • Ensure sustainable systems (performance, talent, rewards) are in place to support and accelerate the achievement of the organization strategy and plan.
Talent
  • Develop comprehensive recruiting, onboarding, development and retention plans aligned with organizational needs, strategy and plans.
  • Ensure World Vision Canand’s hiring practices provide an exceptional digital candidate experience and result in excellent hiring decisions from diverse talent pools.
  • Design and lead talent strategies and discussions, ensuring best practices are in place in each team, including best-practice retention strategies for key contributors and define multi-year plans on workforce skills and capabilities to help accelerate digital transformation efforts.
  • Oversee a talent pipeline (career path) process to ensure staff and leaders are in place for future succession and growth, including leadership and technical competency development.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to the SLT around talent and performance management, policies, and practices.
  • Enable effective workforce management, ensuring the right talent is in the right place, at the right time using a variety of strategies/models.
Employee Experience
  • Ensure effective systems, tools and skills are in place to support a culture of high performance and that they are well understood and utilized by the organization.
  • Coach leaders on building high performance teams and in making talent decisions to promote the needed achievement of goals.
Culture
  • Inspire and foster a culture that gives clear responsibility and authority, where people will be highly engaged, will take care of each other, will figure out ingenious solutions, to deliver exceptional results.
  • Serve as a visible culture champion for the organization, fostering trust and transparency and modelling World Vision Canada’s values, mindsets and behaviours.
  • Openly and regularly communicate about culture to the organization, the SLT and the World Vision Canada’s Board of Directors.
  • Provide leadership, expertise and stewardship for inclusion and diversity, including coaching the organization to build successful, diverse, and inclusive teams, leader accountability and ensuring metrics are regularly analyzed, shared and needed actions are proposed.
  • Design and lead data-informed initiatives to address culture challenges and gaps, including supporting organizational responses to engagement surveys like Our Voice.
Leadership and Management Development
  • Work closely with the CEO and COO to foster leadership excellence and SLT alignment as an essential practice and expectation.
  • Provide CEO, COO and SLT with evidence-based workforce recommendations that will enable value creation and prepare us for the future.
  • Lead the process of defining, communicating and measuring against required leadership capabilities.
  • Coach leaders to connect business strategy to people strategy to build capability and increase performance.
  • Lead the P&C team to develop, motivate, coach and challenge staff for higher performance.
Communications and Community Involvement
  • Craft effective communications for the team, functional areas and the entire organization, including sharing and speaking at large employee gatherings including All Hands meetings and Chapel.
  • Work closely with the communications team to ensure timely and appropriate internal communications content so every staff member understands organization direction and news.
  • Oversee a strong employer brand strategy for the organization to support recruitment.
  • Participate in associations, relationship building and information sharing within the sector.
P&C Core Services
  • Oversee and ensure all Canadian and Partnership human resource compliance requirements are met.
  • Ensure the provision of P&C services to staff in a responsive, accurate and compassionate way.
  • Provide strategic oversight of all reward programs including salary, benefits, retirement plan, and engagement activities, ensuring World Vision Canada’s approach to total reward supports the ongoing strategy.
  • Actively participate in World Vision Partnership communities of practice related to P&C functions, including engagement with World Vision International’s CPO and her/his team.
Spiritual Leadership
  • Partner with the SLT to ensure the integration of our faith into our work, in ways consistent with our mission, vision and core values.
  • Provide spiritual leadership to the team and the organization, connecting our faith to our work and shaping a culture based on our Christian values.
  • Model Christian servant leadership to the P&C team and World Vision Canada’s.
  • Provide opportunities for spiritual nurture, care and encouragement to P&C staff individually and as a team.
Position Specifications (in the interest of inclusion all requirements bring a degree of flexibility)
  • Solid experience as a strategic senior human resources leader inclusive of three or more years as a member of an executive team reporting directly to the President or CEO.
  • Background in successfully leading and developing a team of diverse HR professionals.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Understanding and experience in environments that reflect emerging approaches, including agile and approaches to digital transformation.
  • Proven experience earning a high level of credibility as an effective and responsible resource, or deep experience in the sector in a related field and ability to develop in the function.
  • Christian leader who cultivates and models servant leadership, including clear and positive Christian faith commitment and capacity to provide leadership and guidance in this area, and to ensure World Vision Canada’s identity as a Christian faith-based organization is integrated into our work and teams.
  • CHRL and/or CHRE designation is preferred.
