We are seeking a dynamic and creative Chief of People and Culture to help us practice at the leading edge in our design work on buildings, civic infrastructure, and urban spaces across North America and beyond.
As Chief of People and Culture, you will help our leaders build our internal community of DIALOGers by cultivating a culture of learning, inclusion and creativity. Your reach will be practice-wide in setting our tone and direction in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), the DIALOGer experience, leadership and career development, and attracting and retaining people who care about our communities as much as we do.
DIALOG approaches design holistically, practicing architecture, engineering, interior design, landscape architecture, sustainability, urban design, and planning across four studios in Canada and one in the United States. Our special culture and spirit are founded on a unique collaborative approach with our clients and communities. As a Chief of People and Culture, you can choose to be based in any of our Canadian studios, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton or Toronto.

How you’ll make a difference

  • Develop and lead a People Strategy focused on the growth, development and health of DIALOG while simultaneously maintaining HR operations
  • Collaborate with our practitioners and management leaders to establish a strategic learning and development culture at DIALOG that aligns with talent development needs of our people and our evolving practice
  • Diversity of our people and ideas are key to pre-eminent design that delivers the best projects to our communities. You will set the focus of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program with these design goals, and our strategic priorities, top of mind.
  • Use analytics to measure the DIALOGer experience, program and initiative impacts, and trends. You will interpret and use this information to inform and guide solutions for your team, the Senior Management Team, Governing Council and the practice as a whole
  • As a member of our Senior Management Team (SMT), you will nurture relationships with your SMT colleagues, DIALOG’s Governing Council, and DIALOG’s Chair, advising on HR planning and related issues, and proactively assessing and anticipating HR needs
  • Work directly with DIALOG’s Chair to support the professional and leadership development of DIALOG’s Partners
  • Champion a culture of succession through focused talent development initiatives
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Senior Leadership Team to develop employer branding that reflects our culture and attracts the best designers and other professionals who want to help change the world through design.
  • Build and motivate a team of dynamic, energetic, and engaged leaders who believe in DIALOG’s purpose, and work collaboratively to bring our vision of pre-eminent design to life
  • Champion a positive, inclusive, and diverse culture that supports a trusting, innovative and open environment where teams feel empowered to deliver the best possible service to our clients and communities

At the end of the first year

  • You have created and developed a People and Culture strategy that aligns DEI and Learning and Development practices with the strategic plan goals
  • You have fostered and enabled an HR team that is aligned with our strategy, optimally organized, and recognized for their ability to support the business
  • You are partnering with leaders across the practice to help them achieve their people goals
  • You have materially improved overall organizational effectiveness while enhancing the culture in accordance with our values
  • You are a respected leader and trusted advisor
  • You have championed a positive, engaged, collaborative internal culture modelling a commitment to the delivery of exceptional customer service.
  • You are engaged, happy and excited for what is coming next

Who you are

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience operating at a senior/executive level
  • Post-secondary education, and ongoing professional development relevant to human resource management
  • CPHR designation
  • Previous leadership experience within a professional design or creative services environment
  • Track record for building high-quality, trust-based relationships across a diverse group of people and perspectives
  • Exceptional communicator committed to having difficult and honest conversations when required
  • A change leader focused on building people and culture
  • A decisive and resourceful leader who possesses strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
  • A trusted advisor known for visionary thinking with a results-oriented focus
  • Experience working as an integral member of a senior leadership team, having served as a key influencer, actively engaging with peers and mentoring teams with diverse levels of expertise and perspectives
  • Optimistic, poised, energetic, inspirational, flexible, approachable, accessible, consistent, empathetic, community-oriented, accountable, and an abiding sense of humour
  • Proven track record of success leading in a transformational culture
