Job Summary
Reporting to the Chief Product Officer, the Associate Food Scientist will use scientific principles and expertise, and a broad range of advanced technologies and industrial tools for achieving company goals. The Associate Food Scientist will have a keen understanding and extensive hands-on experience with food product development and exhibit the ability to think beyond standard methods, independently lead and reach conclusions, and clearly deliver results.
Job Responsibilities
Product Development and Innovation
· Understand ingredients and processes to create new product attributes
· Research and develop new food technologies with experiments at the lab and pilot plant scale
· Support and/or conduct product formulation, testing, sensory and instrumental analyses of product prototypes
· Develop product prototypes on the bench and conduct pilot trials, establish data and make a technical case for product feasibility
· Provide written and verbal reports of research activities
· Conduct product development and manufacturing activities in compliance with food safety standards
· Proactively collaborate cross-functionally and support applied research projects
· Accountability over the raw material inventory of the R&D lab
· Ownership over the sample shipment process in conjunction with sales/marketing and the warehouse
· Assistance in the organization and review of new ingredients
· Packaging / labelling / entering samples
· Working closely with the warehouse to receive any R&D ingredients, labelling, and storage
· Setting up any new raw materials for sensory review
· Maintain a safe working environment
Job Requirements
· Recent graduate with Associate or Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Culinology, Hospitality or related field
· Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
· Strong interpersonal and listening skills
· Comfortable working in a start-up environment
· Demonstrated ability to be proactive and jump in to help other team members
· Ability to work effectively in a team environment and take technical direction
· Possess strong technical and functional skills and curiosity to learn
· Conduct hands-on work to explore and optimize ingredients in formulations and processes of manufacturing food
· Understand food chemistry and how to apply what has been learned in coursework to practical culinary and product development formulations
Working Conditions
· Full-time, permanent position requiring flexible hours as required to achieve business objectives
