Your Opportunity:

Alberta Health Services is looking for an experienced Addiction Counsellor with demonstrated capacity and a proven ability to work with clients with complex issues related to addiction. The Addiction Counsellor III will provide specialized treatment and prevention/education services addressing alcohol, other drug and gambling concerns as well as work toward being concurrent disorder capable. The successful candidate will provide these services: Conduct client screening and assessments using established AHS Addiction protocols. Develop treatment plans in collaboration with clients to address identified problems and goals. Make referrals to other programs and services where appropriate, work with clients and significant collaterals to provide information, facilitate successful resolution of crisis, and promote appropriate interventions. Provide ongoing individual and family counseling to promote personal development and recovery. Plan, conduct, and evaluate assigned counseling groups as part of treatment. Provide community consultation, prevention, and education. Maintain current and complete ASIST files to meet AHS Addiction standards. Prepare reports and correspondence as required. Provide consultation to allied professionals on issues related to substance and gambling use and abuse. Assist, develop, and implement community education/prevention training. Comprehensive knowledge of addiction field, psycho-education and psychotherapy group facilitation, case management, and team work required.

Description:

As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will provide quality, client focused, recovery based and culturally appropriate assessment, treatment, case management, crisis intervention, education and referral services for clients and their families; as well as community stabilization services. You will develop and implement treatment plans and provide a range of interventions which offer least intrusive and most appropriate services to clients and their families. You will also monitor and evaluate client progress and achievement of recovery goals and adapt treatment as needed. As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will depend on your excellent relationship building skills with clients, families, government staff and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Addictions or a combination of a bachelor’s degree in a related field with course work in addictions. A related degree combined with a diploma related to addictions, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, may be considered. Individuals eligible for registration under the Health Professions Act must maintain active registration. Individuals may require authorization/permission under regulation to perform restricted psychosocial interventions and/or restricted activities.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Degree or diploma in addiction studies. Preference for educational background in Addiction studies with professional registration. Minimum of two years related work and/or volunteer experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Appropriate registration with a regulatory college (ACSW, CAP, CARNA, CRPNA or ACOT). Ability to provide psychosocial intervention preferred. Preference given to applicants with experience in addiction counseling. A combination of experience and education will be considered.
