How will you make an impact?

The Laboratory Automation group is looking for a dedicated Mechanical Designer to join our Operations team. You will be a member of the project team helping our major customers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology fields in accelerating their development of drug discovery and synthetic biology. You will play an important role in collaborating with customers to translate their sophisticated and challenging scientific processes into effective automated solutions.

The primary responsibility of Mechanical Designer is to provide engineered-to-order (ETO) automated laboratory equipment designs that meets or exceeds our customer’s expectations in a project team environment while maintaining cost, delivery and performance.

What will you do?

  • Ensure the design solutions provided meet the customer’s requirements with an understanding of the full function of the system usage and serviceability
  • Act as a direct customer contact to efficiently move through the design phase of the project
  • Participate as part of a multi-functional project team including; Project Managers, Integrators, Electrical Designers, and Procurement
  • Design mechanical parts and assemblies for custom robotic systems using SolidWorks
  • Selecting components and materials to meet the functional and aesthetic design requirements
  • Preparation of 2D mechanical drawings using SolidWorks
  • Perform engineering calculations for stresses, strength and deflections under static loading
  • Perform robot arm reach assessments to ensure the end effectors can successfully pick and place parts to the various instruments and stations
  • Analyze designs for safety compliance to locally legislated requirements such as OSHA, CSA, CE or customer specific
  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOM) for order release in the ERP system
  • Maintain 3D & 2D design masters and libraries structured in the PDM database for commonly used components and assemblies to allow for design efficiency and consistency project to project
  • Ensure design issues and/or problems are resolved effectively and accurately vetted by the multi-functional team
  • Promote a multi-functional team environment through design reviews at key stages of the projects
  • Work with vendors to review designs for manufacturability and research the best components for the system
  • Provide pre-order technical support and 3D designs when required in support of customer bids
  • Participate in post-mortem project reviews and the continuous improvement efforts

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 10 years’ experience in a mechanical design role
  • 3 years’ experience using SolidWorks for 3D part designs
  • 3 years’ experience in a computer-aid design system: Inventor, Pro-E or CATIA
  • Experience with robotic and/or automated systems considered an asset
  • Professional Engineers of Ontario (P.Eng) license considered an asset

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modelling
  • Able to perform mechanical engineering analysis, including bearing sizing, mechanical interface calculations, and stress calculations
  • Solid understanding of FEA simulations
  • Understanding of Geometric Tolerancing & Dimensioning (GD&T)
  • Understanding of the various fabrication processes used in mechanical assemblies
  • Strong interpersonal skills (oral and written), Proven ability to communicate effectively within the organization and with customers.
  • Detailed oriented with strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Strong time management skills, prioritization abilities and “take ownership of issues and tasks” to be able to manage competing priorities

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license and passport
  • Travel: occasional 1 – 2 times per year
