About Us


The Economics and Fiscal Policy Division plays an integral role in the development of Alberta’s fiscal strategy. This position is in the Economics and Revenue Forecasting branch, within the Economics and Fiscal Policy Division. In this role you will be analyzing economic trends, forecasting and publishing the results of your research related to the provincial economy.


Under the direction of the Manager, Macroeconomic Forecasting, professionally trained economists are responsible for the provision of analyses, forecasts and policy advice on economic matters of concern to Alberta Treasury Board and Finance and the Government of Alberta.


The work performed by the unit is mainly concerned with preparing the economic forecast for the Government of Alberta, which is used by all ministries in the development of their annual budget. Responsibilities include monitoring and reporting on key developments in the Alberta and global economy, conducting economic research, preparing publications and providing assistance in running a complex macroeconomic forecasting model for Alberta as well as complimentary satellite models.


Your success in this role will be demonstrated by your ability to exhibit a high degree of initiative, responsiveness, professionalism, judgment and collaboration. Exceptional verbal and written communications skills will be key in framing and communicating your analysis and policy advice. Your ability to adapt to change, as well as set priorities, will allow you to manage a complex workload and deliver timely results.

Qualifications

A University degree in Economics or in a related field (eg. Business, Statistics, Mathematics) plus a minimum of 4 years of related experience as an Economist or an Analyst.


Knowledge and/or experience in the following is strongly preferred:
  • Monitoring and analyzing economic data/indicators from various sources (such as Statistics Canada, Bank of Canada, etc.)
  • Conducting quantitative analysis and economic research with the use of econometric software (e.g., Eviews, SAS, Stata, R/SPLUS, Python)
  • Preparing written analytical reports
  • Experience working in a busy environment, prioritizing projects and optimizing workflow in order to complete deliverables faster without a loss in quality


Assets include:
  • A master’s degree in Economics
  • Previous experience in a public service sector (eg. Provincial or Federal Government)

Salary

$2,803.40 to $3,674.86 bi-weekly ($73,168 - $95,913/year)

Notes

This is a permanent, full-time position working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.


Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary. This competition may be used to fill future roles at the same or lower classifications.
