Position : Eating Disorders Prevention Specialist

Department : Eating Disorder – Promotion, Prevention and Early Intervention (ED-PPEI)

Reports To : UHN - Director, Eating Disorders

Site : Windsor and surrounding area

Status : Temporary Full Time - 1 year

Salary/Gr : Range consistent with similar community mental health positions within the region

Overview Of Position

The responsibilities of the Eating Disorder Prevention Specialist include: facilitating/performing health promotion and wellness education planning and implementation activities; participating in skills and capacity building activities; participating in research and evaluation activities; providing consumer-oriented eating disorder information and reference material within the community using print and electronic resources; participating in academic forums.

The role supports Windsor and surrounding area. The candidate needs to be located in the Windsor area. Frequent travel within the surrounding area will be required.

The position will be supported by the ED-PPEI team at UHN and the ED-PPEI regional lead organization in Windsor - Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa Association (BANA).

This is a contract position with the potential for extension or transition to permanent full time.

Responsibilities
  • Facilitates/performs health promotion and eating disorder education planning and implementation activities.
  • Designs, conducts and updates community assessments to determine population eating disorder educational needs.
  • Identifies and develops eating disorder wellness and education initiatives based on needs of particular populations.
  • Identifies opportunities to develop collaborative partnerships and linkages with a diverse array of stakeholders and sector champions in the community, clinical, health administration, partner organizations and government divisions.
  • Works collaboratively with a diverse array of stakeholders and sector champions in the community, clinical, health administration, partner organizations and government divisions to organize and implement health service, promotion, education and community outreach events that respond to the eating disorder needs and interests of the community.
  • Participates in community networks that address specific community eating disorder health issues
  • Assists community resources in accessing health related services in the community.
  • Advocates on behalf of community resources to access opportunities/resources for capacities and skills related to eating disorders.
  • Participates in the identification and development of health events/forums/opportunities that foster shared learning and capacity building.
  • Implements a variety of health promotion strategies including health education, social marketing, population health and community development in order to foster individual self-awareness, improve health decision making and promote access to resources necessary for building a strong eating disorder promotion, prevention and early intervention model.
  • Presents at seminars and workshops
Education And Experience
  • Completion of masters degree in health related discipline or recognized equivalent required, or Bachelor’s Degree plus additional education and related years of experience
  • Masters-prepared mental health clinician or counsellor, or undergraduate degree with additional education in counselling or mental health
  • Member in good standing of a regulated health or social service college
  • At minimum, over 3 years practical and related experience
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a mental health setting with a focus on children and youth
  • Psychotherapy qualifications and/or public health experience preferred
  • Experience required in health education, or child/youth education
  • Experience working with anxiety disorders, depression, past trauma or eating disorders or motivational enhancement
  • Experience working with Indigenous population preferred
  • Experience in rural and/or remote health promotion
  • Experience working with diverse cultures is an asset
  • Bilingual: French and English both written and spoken is an asset
  • Facilitation skills and ability to drive consensus across different sectors (clinical, professional, educator, and various community groups), both in-person and virtually
  • Knowledge and experience of health promotion, population health, community development principles, as well as the determinants of health required.
  • Understanding/knowledge of conventional/alternative health practices and how these practices may relate to health and wellness and cultural diversity are required.
  • A valid driver’s license and own transportation is required
