Purpose

The Director, Global Governance & Controls is a key member of the Global Banking and Markets Internal Control team. The Director leads a team that manages the delivery of key risk and control programs within the 1st line, and also the delivery of business enabling technology and solutions.


Position Highlights:

  • Primary / Global Internal Control representative on key risk and control programs (e.g. CRCA, RCSA, Monitoring Standard, Issues Standard et al.)
  • Collaborate with key 2nd line partners on the evolution of these key risk and control programs, informing their development as appropriate and on behalf of the global Internal Control team
  • Partner with Regional Internal Control teams on achieving globally standardized levels of execution across all risk and control programs
  • Engage with the business effectively to understand what they need to be successful - partner with Technology to deliver effective business technology solutions to enable that success
  • Provide program level change leadership to ensure that change is managed to a defined lifecycle replete with appropriate governance, documentation and reporting
  • Support and execute upon the GBM Internal Controls strategy and drive the group’s change agenda.
  • Lead governance forums (meetings, working groups, steercos) and manage relationships across a broad swathe of stakeholders
  • Ensure that senior management are always appropriately informed in order to drive effective decision making
  • Effectively prioritize within and across book of work
  • Be coherent and articulate on the Internal Controls mandate globally and understand how it fits within the broader business and regulatory context
  • Operate as a proxy for VP, Global Governance and Controls when the occasion demands it
  • Be a strong, inspiring and effective people manager to your direct reports and a great team-mate to everyone else


What You’ll Do:

  • Global coverage of the GBM business line - GBM contributes ~20% to the total net income of the Scotiabank Group;
  • Complex and very different business units within GBM;
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of operational processes throughout the applicable Business Lines and the state of regulatory matters, be able to resolve issues of non-compliance and to escalate issues promptly that are deemed to be serious, or have broad impact;
  • May lead multiple initiatives or other activities with tight deadlines and also participate in regulatory reviews
  • Able to take own initiative, to resolve issues and also recognize the need to involve his/her supervisor/s and/or Subject Matter Experts when required.


What You’ll Bring:

  • University degree in business, finance, other related field;
  • Knowledge of GBM products or wholesale banking organization and client interaction process is an asset;
  • Experience leading projects/programs is required
  • Experience with regulatory/risk related projects is preferred
  • Project management training (PMP/PRINCE/Other) is preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to guide decision making process and facilitate consensus;
  • Proven problem solving skills and experience;
  • Strong writing skills, experience creating high quality deliverables and projects;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the Business Lines, Supervisors and other stakeholders.


Work Arrangement:

This position is currently a Hybrid role. Please note that this is subject to change based on the needs of the business.
