South Riverdale Community Health Centre is a non-profit, multi-service organization that provides primary healthcare, social and community outreach services with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention primarily to people of East Toronto. The Director of Community Engagement & Communications will be responsible for the design and implementation of strategic engagement, outreach and communications that helps SRCHC maximize community impact through collective action. The Director will build, support, and maintain relationships with residents, community members, community groups and local businesses to achieve the agency’s mission of healthy communities where everyone belongs. The Director is responsible for the organization’s communications programs, effectively sharing, promoting and conveying SRCHC’s messages both internally and externally, as well as marketing and generating resources for the organization. The ideal candidate will be a skilled facilitator and communicator with a proven track record of collective impact and communications with diverse communities. They will have solid understanding of community organizing, public relations, social justice and stakeholder management. This role requires considerable skill in relationship building, including the ability to develop and foster partnerships, negotiation and conflict resolution, and the ability to collaborate effectively with residents and community groups. Participates as a member of the senior leadership team.

This position is expected to work onsite.

Responsibilities:
External Stakeholder Engagement
  • Work to deepen our organization’s efforts to create and foster relationships that drive impactful partnerships to support achieving our vision of healthy communities where everyone belongs
  • Deliver stakeholder engagement strategies that identify and anticipate social risks to projects, formulate and recommend solutions to meet these challenges
  • Primarily responsible for developing a roadmap for comprehensive community engagement that positively impacts the reputation of SRCHC in the community
  • Build, foster and nurture positive working relationships with community members, grassroots groups, local businesses, community organizations, and neighbourhood associations
  • Lead and support the delivery of stakeholder engagement for a range of SRCHC services
  • Play a leadership role on SRCHC’s Community Liaison Committee (CLC) and other community advisory committees
  • Provide a strategic perspective on the preparation of communication and engagement materials including presentations, agendas, key messages, frequently asked questions, fact sheets, display panels etc.
  • Plan and coordinate engagement events of various sizes and complexity (both in-person and virtual) to promote SRCHC programs and services
  • Leverage digital tools and technologies in the delivery of engagement activities
  • Prepare consultation summary reports based on analysis and synthesis of input received from engagement activities
  • Evaluate outreach and engagement programs and identify areas for continuous improvement
  • Develop and maintain a real-time dashboard for community engagement and feedback
  • Acts as SRCHCs ombudsman for clients and community
  • Serve as point of contact and oversee the organizational response and communications to stakeholders about SRCHC programs and services
  • Develop and manage community feedback dashboard and reporting to SRCHC senior leadership and the board
  • Develop procedures/workflow to manage the timely logging, response and responses to community feedback
Communication
  • Oversight of all communications that promote the organization and development of strategy to keep stakeholders informed about the SRCHC activities, achievements, needs, concerns and action plans
  • Identifying opportunities for SRCHC to participate in and influence the development of community initiatives and public policy in areas central to SRCHC’s mandate
  • Develop, implement and evaluate communications strategies/plans
  • Ensure all messaging aligns with key organizational strategies, vision, mission and values and act as the spokesperson for the organization and support the CEO as appropriate
  • Chairs and leads communications cross-organizational committee
  • Work centre-wide to coordinate the generation of content for print and digital media to ensure its alignment with the agency’s strategic communication plan and values
  • Curate content and oversee the maintenance of SRCHC’s websites
  • Manage the development, design and production of print and digital media including newsletters, brochures and content on SRCHC’s website and social media
  • Monitor media and social media, listen, respond and report trends to Senior Leadership
  • Coordinate updates and distribution of content for the organizational mailing list
  • Lead the development of the Annual Report and other publications
  • Develop and maintain rapport with journalists, identify and pursue media and press opportunities and high-quality and informative press releases
  • Continue to build repositories of professional photographs, b-roll videos and testimonials for publications/media
  • Create presentations and reports for both external and internal use
  • Coordinate and oversee the development organizational videos as required
  • Oversight of communications toolkit to assist staff in programmatic communications
  • Lead the development of a crisis communications plan and coordinate relevant trainings to train staff as spokespersons
  • Manage and negotiate contracts and work with third party vendors and partners
  • Provide quarterly and annual analytics and communications reports
  • Market SRCHC and its programs and services as per communications plan
  • Work with Leadership & Finance Team to advance SRCHC’s resource generation strategies
  • Represent SRCHC at all relevant OHT tables and support collective OHT communications work
  • Lead and plan centre wide and public facing events with a team of staff across the organization
  • Manage communications costs within allocated budget
  • All other duties as required
Qualifications:
  • Master’s level degree from a recognized university or a combination of an undergraduate degree with significant Marketing and Communications, Public Relations, Business and management experience
  • Minimum of five to 10 years recent related communications and community engagement experience within the not for profit sector with at least five years management and staff supervision experience within a community setting
  • Demonstrated ability to working alongside community members and has a commitment to uplifting diverse voices of lived experience
  • Experience working with community based, multi-service agencies or in the not-for-profit sector
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and techniques of community engagement and outreach, including innovative principles of interactive strategies and techniques and how to translate practices into effective solutions
  • Experience with public relations and building trust with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage sensitive or controversial subjects with tact, diplomacy, kindness, and professionalism
  • Effective and persuasive communicator with the ability to highlight the organization’s commitment to Health Equity and to communicate nuances both verbal and in writing
  • Ability to lead/self-motivate and take initiative to drive work forward
  • Solid understanding of government and media relations
  • Demonstrated respect for diversity, equity, anti-racism and accessibility with the ability to work collaboratively and positively with others
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategies to promote diversity and positive working relationships within the organization
  • Experience with technologies and best practices for communications across multiple platforms
  • Strong skills in the use of computer technology and various software applications including media monitoring, social media management tools, mailchimp, wordpress, etc
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital media/social media
  • Ability to take initiative to develop new strategies and outside-of-the-box ideas for communications and social media
  • Experience negotiating contracts with 3rd party vendors
  • Ability to think strategically and work effectively as a member of the senior leadership team Demonstrated experience working collaboratively and independently
  • Knowledge of resource generation is an asset
  • Police clearance documentation will be required for employment
