Director, Business Analytics

Reporting to the Senior Director, the Director, Business Analytics will work closely with the Chief Financial Officer, and Senior Management to develop a roadmap for the Business Analytics team at Firm, and execute against that strategy. The Director will be accountable to provide leadership and direction to the Business Analytics team while also developing new and improved business processes analysis, data architecture design and development, and the implementation of workflow enabled solutions in conjunction with department leaders to promote an environment of continuous improvement.

We are currently working remotely and the role offers hybrid work flexibility post pandemic.

Primary Responsibilities:

• With the Senior Director, developing and executing a Business Analytics strategy that supports the Firm’s priorities and needs. Reviewing and adapting the strategy to align with evolving business priorities
• Building and developing the Business Analytics team. Providing day to day direction and leadership, including setting priorities and deadlines, resourcing, identifying highest value projects and initiatives, providing mentoring and training, and guiding development work
• Identifying and delivering leading technologies and practices within Business Analytics, keeping the team on the forefront of evolving techniques in the areas of business analytics and professional services
• Developing strong relationships with stakeholders to understand their business needs and ensuring the team is focused on delivering valuable tools and measurable service to the Firm’s business owners
• Identifying and delivering on opportunities to increase profitability of the Firm
• Ensuring the overall management, availability, usability, integrity and security of data used at Fasken
• Providing tools and developing descriptive and predictive solutions to senior management and other stakeholders to transform data into metrics that support Management decisions
• Ensuring for the accuracy and integrity of the data in the deliverables produced by the team.
• Managing projects by outlining detailed steps and milestones of a project and allocating resources and deadlines for each step
• Transforming analysis into visualizations to enhance understanding and retention for the end users
• Integrating data from different internal information systems to perform more robust analysis than what is available in the various data sources
• Assisting department leaders to develop new and/or enhanced processes aimed at improving productivity and efficiency
• Providing training to internal stakeholders on areas of expertise (data mining concepts, client, matter enquiry, lawyer dashboard, data warehouse, Fasken reports)

Required Knowledge and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Information Technology, Economics, Statistics, Applied Math, or any other related field.
• 5+ years’ work experience in a similar role, preferably within a professional services, matrix organization.
• Proven leadership skills and the ability to motivate and develop teams.
• Experience delivering solutions that improve profitability or identify and drive business opportunities.
• Knowledge of algorithms, data structures, performance optimization and experience with processing and interpreting data sets.
• 3+ years of programming experience, at least part of it in building production data systems.
• Experience with Big Data solutions and cloud computing infrastructures such as Azure and / or AWS, Gate Hub.
• Practical expertise in performance tuning, bottleneck problems analysis, troubleshooting and optimizing processes
• 5+ years’ experience in data architecture, data warehouse, data mining and modelling
• 5+ years’ experience in SQL, Python and R
• 5+ years’ experience with a BI solution, SQL Server Reporting Services and Visual Studio, PowerBI are preferred
• Extensive knowledge and experience in designing and applying data mining concepts including data controls, and data manipulation.
• Working knowledge of general accounting principles
• Strong technical skills with Microsoft Office Suite applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, MS Project)
