What is the opportunity?

The Director, Accounting Policy is a key leader in the Accounting Policy team, developing and presenting executive materials and collaborating with stakeholders across Finance, Risk Management, Valuations and other enterprise functions on business critical initiatives. This is an ideal position from which to develop an understanding of RBC’s significant business issues, build technical and leadership skills and develop strong relationships across the Bank.

As part of the Chief Accountant’s Group in our Toronto head office, you will be part of a collaborative team culture that strives to challenge ourselves to be our best, think progressively to keep growing, and work together to deliver collective results.

The Accounting Policy function serves a critical role by providing insights & advice on complex accounting issues from across the organization. We are trusted business advisors who evaluate and advise on accounting impacts to RBC’s business, drive change to operationalize accounting policies and actively participate in industry advocacy. We also play a significant role in telling the story of RBC’s financial results to the public through the quarterly Financial Statements and Notes to Shareholders.

What will you do?

  • Review and provide advice on complex accounting issues and transactions related to head office functions including Group Risk Management, Technology & Operations, Corporate Real Estate, and Taxation
  • Lead touchpoints and work with key stakeholders to drive accounting advisory conclusions consistent with research and our Corporate Accounting Policies which incorporate an operational and practical lens
  • Communicate financial and organizational impacts and status updates to senior finance executives
  • Tell the RBC story in the Audit Committee materials for senior finance executives with a commercial/business lens, focusing on key judgment areas. Coordinate with the broader finance team, including Investor Relations, Performance Management, Corporate Treasury and Group Risk Management, among others, to incorporate key updates on financial performance, reporting, market insights and finance projects with a focus on elevating and highlighting the role of finance. Own the process and bring your unique perspective to set ambitious goals, implement process improvements and challenge the status quo while fostering strong partnerships
  • Lead review of disclosures in the quarterly Report to Shareholders and Annual Report, including accounting policies, off-balance sheet and impairment, in collaboration with Financial and Regulatory Reporting and Business Finance partners
  • Ensure accuracy and quality of disclosures in Financial Statement Notes and sections of Management’s Discussion & Analysis with effective challenge; lead discussions with external auditors
  • Foster team-building, trust and cross-functional efficiencies through effective collaboration with key contributors such as External Reporting, Financial & Regulatory Reporting, and Reporting Shared Services
  • Liaise with RBC’s external and internal auditors and other industry stakeholders on financial accounting and reporting policy issues, as needed. Lead and coordinate CBA.
  • Drives progress and contributes to Chief Accountants Group and Finance & Controller strategic initiatives

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to communicate effectively to senior executives, presenting accounting items in a commercial context.
  • Strong interpersonal skills – specifically, able to act as change agent, facilitator and collaborator
