Position Title: Urban Forestry and Naturalization Coordinator

Duration: Permanent

Department: Culture Recreation and Green Transportation

Hours of Work: 40 hrs/week

Under the supervision and direction of the Manager of Parks and Recreation Facilities, the Urban Forestry and Naturalization Coordinator is primarily responsible for urban forestry and naturalization programs such as planting, pruning, and evaluation of trees and plants.

YOUR JOB DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:

1. Urban Forestry and Naturalization Programs

  • Perform and monitor fieldwork for the urban forestry and naturalization programs.
  • Advise the City on the use of plants and trees as a green infrastructure
  • Identify opportunities for naturalization sites in the City.
  • Monitor, track, and report on the condition of the City’s natural areas
  • Ensure the City’s trees and green space are adapting to climate change.
  • Plan, organize, implement and document naturalization activities including plantings, monitoring and controlling plant disease, and maintenance of trees and shrubs.
  • Evaluate tree health to determine the hazard potential and recommend possible
  • solutions.
  • Maintain knowledge of equipment operation, fertilizer and chemical application guidelines and various related horticultural information.
  • Assist crews in plant maintenance, landscaping and construction activities (such as planting trees and shrubs).
  • Assist with projects related to the Dutch Elm Disease program.

2. Supervisory

  • Supervise personnel in urban forestry and naturalization programs such as planting, pruning, and evaluation of trees and plants
  • Responsible for training and competency evaluation of personnel.
  • Instruct City staff in proper pruning, planting, and maintenance practices.

3. Administrative

  • To assist the Manager in developing procedures and programs for accomplishing approved objectives, including the development of methods, standards, scheduling and reporting systems for an effective delivery of municipal services within the Parks and Recreation Facilities Division.
  • To assist in the preparation of long-range and short-term planning.
  • Maintain various database such as, but not limited to, tree inventory.
  • Documentation of naturalization activities (site photos, spreadsheets, reports, and mapping).

4. Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Perform pre-trip inspections, routine checks, minor servicing, cleaning, and basic maintenance of the equipment they are operating.
  • Inform the Director, Manager and/or Mechanic by filling out a vehicle/equipment work request form, an any required significant maintenance or safety problem of equipment or vehicles they are operating.

5. Exceptional Citizen Service

  • Ensure the efficient and effective provision of services to Citizens and respond to inquiries from the public and other Departments.
  • Assist CitizenSupport Representatives by providing essential information to efficiently respond to citizen inquiries.
  • Work with the Marketing and Communications Coordinator to prepare public communications to increase awareness related to urban forestry and naturalization.
  • As part of environmental stewardship to improve City practices and services, responsible to prepare reports, policies, procedures, and programs for accomplishing approved objectives.
  • Respond to inquiries from Senior Management.
  • Work co-operatively with all City Departments and personnel to support corporate initiatives.

6. Capital Asset Management Program

  • Understand and comply with the City’s Capital Asset Management policies.
  • Support the development and delivery of the City’s Capital Asset Management Program by providing advice and undertaking related tasks as needed.

7. Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

SPECIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Knowledge and Experience

Minimum qualifications shall include:

  • Degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Ecology, Urban Forestry, Forest Ecology, Botany or related discipline
  • Minimum 3 years related experience in urban forestry, horticulture setting, and naturalization
  • Arborist Certification
  • Experience in management or a supervisory capacity
  • Experience planting flowers, grasses, trees and shrubs
  • Experience in landscaping considered an asset
  • Valid Manitoba Class 3 Drivers Licence.
  • Knowledge and interest in the native plants and plant communities of Selkirk.
  • Experience providing exceptional customer service
  • Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing. This includes the ability to understand and deliver written and verbal instructions
  • Demonstrated organizational and teamwork skills
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at once
  • Ability to manage conflict
  • Computer and administrative skills
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization and external contacts
  • Demonstrated competency in safe work practices, knowledge and understanding of occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work
  • Must be able to work in a parks environment which includes extreme weather conditions

Desired Qualifications shall include:

  • Chainsaw training and proficiency
  • Aerial lift/lift truck training and proficiency
  • Manitoba Master Gardener Association Membership
  • Weed applicator license
