Supporting science, research and analysis, the Environmental and Climate Monitoring Section is responsible for the provincial ambient air, water, snow and climate monitoring networks. The section directs monitoring equipment procurement and installation, data collection and management activities, quality assurance procedures, and reporting of air and water quality trends and state of the environment information. Through sharing of the data collected and the information obtained, regarding ambient air and water quality within the province, the section helps shape ministry policy, standards development and implementation, and associated effectiveness monitoring approaches.

Reporting to the Unit Head – Air and Climate Networks, ensures all aspects of data analysis and analytics are applied to the Ministry’s air quality and hydrometeorological (Snow Program) data streams to report accurate, reliable and repeatable data. Data are reported through two programs:

  • the Air Program that meets the requirements for the Air Quality Management System (as defined by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME)); and
  • the Snow Program that meets client requirements for water management activities (flood forecasting, water licencing), and climate change monitoring.

All data generated must meet a consistent standard of accuracy and reliability as it informs the setting of environmental standards, program development and executive decision-making supporting the management of industrial emissions in air sheds, air quality and health related issues reported to the public, water use and stage forecasting (flood, hydro-electric generation and conservation) and increase the understanding of the climate change impact in the Province in remote locations.

The BC Public Service is committed to creating a diverse workplace to represent the population we serve and to better meet the needs of our citizens. Consider joining our team and being part of an innovative, inclusive and rewarding workplace.
