The Department of Pharmacology is an integral part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. We are proud of the excellence of our scientific research and our deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.

Position

The MacDonald lab (research lab) and ADI IsletCore (biobanking facility at the Alberta Diabetes Institute, operated by the MacDonald lab) are leaders in pancreas and islet biology. As a senior lab technologist the candidate will provide leadership in the daily operation and training in the lab; will perform laboratory experiments and train and mentor others in experimental work; and will oversee external collaborative interactions. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for some administrative duties within the lab and IsletCore.

Duties

  • Quality control experiments for IsletCore
  • Collect human islet samples for IsletCore phenotyping
  • Design and execution of experiments with external collaborations
  • Act as a resource person for all lab staff
  • Provide feedback to PI for laboratory performance of students and staff
  • Purchasing of all lab supplies for the research group to ensure continued and efficient operation of the laboratory

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in science. Masters degree preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in islet biology laboratory with experience in islet isolation, hormone secretion measurements.
  • 10+ years experience in a research environment
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills.
  • Experience in developing SOPs
  • Ability to work independent and prioritize tasks
  • Ability to adapt and pivot to rapidly changing demands
  • Trained in WHMIS, TDG, Chematix, First aid
  • Computer proficiency with MS office (Work, Excel, PowerPoint), data analysis (GraphPad Prism, data management software (REDcap)
