Senior Business Analyst

Location: Edmonton, AB or Calgary, AB

Consults with IT Team members sponsoring technology change and other resources as necessary to determine how people, data, processes, communications, and information technology can best accomplish improvements for the business. In achieving this, the Business Analyst, Information Technology acts as a facilitator and liaison, bridging the gap between the sponsoring group and technical resources. When problem solving, the focus is primarily on the business and technical aspects with an emphasis on troubleshooting difficult requirements. In addition, the Business Analyst, Information Technology is responsible for developing documentation including business cases, funding documentation, requirements and user acceptance testing approaches/completion and may be assigned reporting responsibilities. Must be able to build rapport with the team and with the business, explore impacts of decisions and include in business cases, able to articulate and view strategy, and provide strong and nurturing leadership/mentoring to the business analysis team. Must have leadership experience in leading a Business Analyst Team.

  • Serve as key contact throughout the business case lifecycle including project initiation.
  • Interpret and translate needs, assess current business solution capabilities and advises on possible solution.
  • Serve as a key contact with a Business Relationship Manager and a project sponsor before the project starts .
  • Assist when required in the preparation of a high-level project estimate and project timeframe.
  • Develop business cases for initiatives in alignment with ATCO, IT, and regulatory standards.
  • Work with business teams to create deliverables that help identify how the project will measure success.
  • Serve as key contact with a project sponsor and project manager once project begins.
  • Partner with team to influence and consult on the approach taken throughout the full project life cycle.
  • Provide Business Requirements to the systems analyst and the service provider in developing system/design specifications.
  • Performs business process modeling and business process improvement and business analysis using accepted methodologies applying best practices.
  • Ensure appropriate version controls are in place and that sign off is obtained on final products as required.
  • Maintains a current awareness of techniques, methodologies, and standards for business analysis as well as an understanding of IT’s project delivery philosophy and systems development lifecycle.
  • Perform key BA activities:
    1)Strategy Analysis: tasks used to identify the business need, address that need, and align the change strategy within the enterprise.
    2)Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring: tasks used to organize and coordinate business analysis efforts.
    3)Elicitation and Collaboration: tasks used to prepare for and conduct elicitation activities and confirm the results.
    4)Requirements Analysis and Design Definition: tasks used to organize requirements, specify and model requirements and designs, validate and verify information, identify solution options, and estimate the potential value that could be realized.
    5)Requirements Life Cycle Management: tasks used to manage and maintain requirements and design information from inception to retirement.
    6)Solution Evaluation: tasks used to assess the performance of and value delivered by a solution and to recommend improvements on increasing values.
  • Strong communication both within all areas of the IT Organization and ATCO as a whole

Who You Are:

  • A college diploma in IT, Commerce or Business or an Undergraduate degree is preferred.
  • 7-10 years of relevant experience along with CBAP, PMI BPA are preferred certifications.
  • Demonstrates well developed communication and presentation skills. Understands how to communicate difficult/sensitive information tactfully to internal and external groups.
  • Produces effective and professional written materials including presentations to internal and external groups.
  • Applies sound consulting skills with GBU and technical resources to determine effective and efficient solutions to business requirements.
  • Sound knowledge of IT resources, enabling technologies, and business issues and processes.
  • Understanding of project management and business analysis methodologies.
  • Demonstrates understanding of high-level data models as they relate to business process models.
  • Demonstrates ability to gather, communicate and document business processes as well as requirements for the various organizational areas and project stakeholders that rely on that information to define system requirements and organizational processes.
  • Maintains an understanding of the Utilities industry, including IT strategy, industry trends, directions and best practices.
  • Complies with and influences other project team members to ensure project methodologies and standards are being followed.
  • Strong skills in prioritization, organization, time management, project planning, and follow up.
  • Establishes strong relationship with team, continually seeks opportunities to increase customer satisfaction, anticipate needs before they arise and effectively manages expectations within realm of influence.
