Position Description

The Centre for Youth Bipolar Disorder (CYBD) is a clinical research program focused on youth bipolar disorder. CYBD activities include intervention studies, observational studies, biological studies, and knowledge translation relevant to youth bipolar disorder.

We are seeking a full-time Scientific Associate with clinical research experience with methodologic skills in neuroimaging and peripheral biomarkers and vascular measures. The incumbent will report to the Director of CYBD and join a clinical research team working on a number of research studies. In this position, you will be responsible for working both autonomously and in a team of research staff to achieve study targets.

The successful candidate will be required to establish local collaborations, and provide practical training, supervision, and consultation of undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral trainees, and research staff. Responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing fluid biomarker collection, processing and storage
  • Leading oversight, training, and quality control for peripheral vascular measures, including peripheral arterial tonometry and applanation tonometry
  • Coordination of the day-to-day operations of various research studies, including pre-screening and screening of participants into multiple research protocols, ensuring that study recruitment targets are met, tracking recruitment outcomes
  • Assisting in the onboarding and training of new research staff and graduate students and ensuring all study staff have completed all appropriate training and training documentation is in place prior to carrying out study-specific tasks
  • Assist with the conceptualization and writing of research grants to funding agencies such as CIHR.
  • Perform literature searches and statistical analyses using statistics software, generate figures and graphics for manuscripts and presentations
  • Participate in the dissemination of research results through conference presentations and publications, and by helping trainees with these outputs as well

The Scientific Associate will play an important role in training and mentorship of staff and research trainees. You will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements. This position is located at 80 Workman Way, and the role will be primarily on-site.

Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in relevant discipline (e.g. health sciences) including three (3) years of relevant clinical research with youth with psychiatric disorders and their families, as well as previous experience in an academic research setting
  • Methodologic expertise in neuroimaging and vascular measures (peripheral arterial tonometry, applannation tonometry) is required
  • Experience in providing support with research procedures to research teams in a fast-paced clinical setting is a strong asset
  • Study monitoring and quality assurance/control experience is a requirement.
  • Experience with recruitment for multiple studies, maintaining study logs and coordination of studies is a requirement
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory system is an asset
  • Experience and familiarity with structured diagnostic interviewing (e.g., KSADS, SCID), and clinical rating scales (e.g., ALIFE, YMRS) is preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency in statistical analyses and related software is required
  • Excellent communication skills (oral/written), along with the ability to establish positive, collaborate working relationships with team members and collaborators
  • The successful candidate will have excellent attention to detail and the the ability to multi-task and produce high-quality, accurate work in a fast-paced environment, while meeting deadlines
  • The ideal candidate should have a strong record of scientific accomplishments (e.g. publications), complemented by strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
  • The applicant will demonstrate a commitment to conducting and fostering research and enthusiasm regarding participating in multidisciplinary research and training activities
  • Superior organizational skills along with analytical and problem solving skills are required
  • Candidates require the ability to work effectively in a variety of settings with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Please Note:This full-time, contract (1 year) position is NOT part of any bargaining unit.
