As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves around the world and in our local community, Conestoga College continues to adjust plans based on the guidance provided by our local Public Health authority. Considering these unprecedented circumstances, final hiring decisions remain contingent upon confirmed enrolment numbers and the evolving work environment. The Recreation and Activity Coordinator is responsible for creating a motivating environment for Conestoga students to engage in movement and healthy living initiatives. The incumbent will plan, coordinate, and facilitate fitness and recreational programming to support the growing and diverse student population. The incumbent will collaborate with various College stakeholders and internal partners to create fulfilling student activities and regular programming to motivate participation in physical activity and sport. The Recreation and Activity Officer is responsible for the oversight, training, and coordination of student staff that facilitate student programming and fitness facilities within the Student Recreation Centre.

This position requires flexible hours to support student programming. The incumbent would be scheduled 10AM to 6PM Monday through Friday, hours in the evening and on weekends may be needed to support student events.

Although many of our employees are currently working remotely, this position is governed by the applicable legislation of the Province of Ontario. Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required.

Responsibilities
  • Utilize research, evaluation, and current trends to develop a student activities calendar that offers a variety of programming opportunities for all fitness levels
  • Active facilitator for student activities and events that engage and motivate students towards healthy lifestyle choices
  • Collaborate with Operations Coordinator and Facility and Events Coordinator to utilize Fusion Innosoft to program fitness, recreation, and student events
  • Coordinate vendor communication, servicing, and repair of Fitness Centre equipment and supplies
  • Active contributor in the hiring, training, feedback, and evaluation of part-time student staff
  • Development of staff schedules to support operational and programming needs
  • Ability to successfully analysis and evaluate student programming through use of surveys, informal and format student feedback, and environmental scans
  • Develop semesterly reports for Manager to provide insight, assessment, and trends in student programming, reflecting on defined outcomes
  • Working with the Manager, support in project management strategies for the continual growth of fitness, health, recreation & sport programming at various College campuses and to support various student demographics
  • Develop and lead initiatives focused on minor groups, such as, foundational learn to play programs, women’s-only programs, sports programs for diverse cultures, etc.
  • Participate in active recruitment and evaluation of third-party contracts
  • Collaborate with Manager on grant writing, applications, and reporting
  • Involvement in OCAA, CCAA, and other provincial or national recreational committees and learning opportunities
Qualifications
  • 3-Year Diploma/Degree in Recreation, Recreation Management, Physical Education, Kinesiology, Fitness & Health Promotion, or related field
  • Minimum 3-years experience working with individuals in a Recreation Programming/Fitness capacity, preferably in an educational setting
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through an accredited provider
  • Fitness Certificate recognized in Ontario (Certified Personal Trainer, CanFitPro, Ontario Fitness Council, or equivalent), or ability to complete certificate in first 3 months of employment
  • Experience advising, delegating, leading, and motivating staff members or volunteers
  • Ability to work with diverse groups as defined in the Human Rights Charter
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, evaluate, and use institutional data to create outcome-based programs and services
  • Advanced computer skills including familiarity with Recreation Management Software considered an asset
  • Strong judgement, flexibility, adaptability, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Continuing education, workshops, and/or seminars in Recreation or Fitness preferred
