Reading Specialist: Department of Children, Youth and Families

Reporting to the Library Coordinator, the Reading Specialist is responsible for the reading intervention for students with reading difficulties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assess children to establish reading benchmarks using a universal screening tool
• Develop individual education plans and implement them.
• Develop innovative tools that will motivate children to learn
• Actively monitor the academic progress of the students being tutored
• Participate in update meetings with Library Coordinator and Education Coordinator
• Complete all administrative tools needed to manage the program (recording data, a summary of sessions, etc.)
• Speak with parents update them on their child’s progress
• Develop positive interpersonal working relationships with the educator, parents, teachers, other staff members, mentors and children
• Monitor database to ensure information is current and accurate.
• Work on weekends to supervise the library

Qualifications:

• CEGEP degree in a related field or relevant experience
• Minimum 2 years of experience in tutoring
• Must be bilingual.
• Effective written and oral communication skills
• Knowledge of issues facing children in marginalized communities
• Strong understanding of and ability to support child development
• Strong organization skills and ability to manage time
• Facility with the computer
• Must be a team player; learning, working and communicating with other staff members is essential

Job Conditions:

• $18-$ 20 per hour
• Hours: 12-18 hours per week over 3 afternoons and 1 weekend day. Some flexibility is required.
• Part-time contract starting September 7, 2021, and ending June 4, 2022
