The University of Toronto and its Academic Divisions are continually seeking to amplify the impact of their research and innovation activities. To enable this, Divisions are adding new divisional research officers to augment the expertise and bandwidth of existing highly skilled individuals already in place. The Division of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation (VPRI) will invite these individuals together into a community of practice.


The Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School, which plays a critical role in the COVID-19 pandemic response, went through a dramatic renaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world. With almost $30 million annually in research funding held at DLSPH, the School contributes to improving population health and health systems through discoveries and innovation in data science and AI, climate change response, implementation and improvement sciences, preventable disease and wellness, sustainable and equitable health systems, global and Indigenous health, among many other areas.

The Office of Research (OR) at DLSPH is supported by a goal-driven ambitious team who has contributed to a 2.5 times increase in research funding held at DLSPH over the past five years. The OR provides pre- and post-grant research support to approximately 90 core faculty members at DLSPH, as well as status faculty submitting and holding their grants at DLSPH. The mandate of the OR is to support faculty members with research services and to develop strategies to increase research funding held at DLSPH.

Your opportunity:

The Partnership Development Officer (PDO) will support the Dalla Lana School of Public Health’s (DLSPH) research community to advance the DLSPH’s and the University of Toronto’s strategic research administration activities. The position will work in collaboration with the Division of the Vice-President Research & Innovation (VPRI).

The PDO is a new position at the DLSPH OR that aims to increase institutional entrepreneurship and innovation research competitiveness through (i) the support of strategic research partnerships, (ii) supporting and advising faculty on private sector and non-traditional (e.g. NGOs) funding application strategies, (iii) identifying and fostering partnerships and supporting interdisciplinary teams for large complex proposals, (iv)researching and recommending new opportunities for external collaborations and partnerships, (v) developing project budget and schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting. You will work in a highly collaborative and versatile environment, and have the opportunity to apply your strong project management and advanced writing and oral communication skills, while applying creative thinking into your work. The PDO will be a critical and valued member of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health’s Office of Research (OR) and will work to cultivate a strong entrepreneurship and innovation culture. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Research.

Your responsibilities will include:


  • Identifying, developing, and executing strategies for research and development collaborations
  • Researching and recommending new opportunities for external collaborations and partnerships
  • Advising faculty on funding application strategies, research application content and challenges with funding opportunities then providing options and developing plans that support proposal development strategies
  • Writing and editing funding applications content as well as drafting presentation materials then delivering presentations to promote programs, opportunities and initiatives
  • Researching new opportunities for collaborations and partnerships
  • Developing marketing and partnerships plans to support areas of research
  • Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting and tracking status of partnership development initiatives
  • Producing complex statistical/financial reports, planning and revenue generation/spending to support decision making


Essential Qualifications:


  • Master’s degree in a related field or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five (5) years’ of relevant work experience managing research or partnership grants and identifying, developing and executing strategies for partnership and development
  • Experience researching, identifying, and advising on partnership funding opportunities and collaboration (e.g. NGOs, private sector)
  • Experience interpreting, summarizing, and translating technical concepts and scientific research initiatives across a variety of subject domains into oral communications to technical and non-technical audiences, and into written communication leading to fundable proposals.
  • Proven experience in business development, strategic planning, and project management
  • Experience working simultaneously on multiple complex programs withcompeting deadlines.
  • Strong decision-making skills; superior planning and project management skills with a focus on executing and competing tasks under pressure and within deadlines
  • Ability to write powerful, concise and informative reports and proposals
  • Ability to maintain a broad perspective; ability to build and maintain effective relationships with all levels of faculty, staff, senior administration and external constituents
  • Ability to understand a complex relational database on research funding
  • Client-services oriented with demonstrated listening and critical thinking skills
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 15 - $84,316 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $107,826. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
