On behalf of our client, a well-established Manufacturing Company, we are looking for an Operations Manager to join their team in Delta, BC. The organization story began in 1974 when they started manufacturing and distributing quality industrial, automotive, and marine chemical products. By the early 90’s, a shift was noticed in consumer demand for natural and environmentally friendly products. Acknowledging the needs of the marketplace, the organization first acquired the exclusive manufacturing and marketing rights for a line of enzyme-based formulations. Since that time, they have proudly developed and manufactured a variety of natural and safe to use products for the medical, industrial, and agricultural marketplace.

The Operations Manager will be responsible to plan, manage, organize, and direct the primary operational functions of the company including manufacturing, supply chain, quality control, maintenance and safety. The Operations Manager will be looked upon to provide professional assistance to support the Chief Operating Officer.

KEY LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Accountability 1: Corporate

  • Consistently embody and model the adherence to the corporate values of the organization.

  • Protect and maintain strict confidentiality of the company, its products, formulations, and processes along with the personal information of all staff.
  • Be accountable for the effectiveness of the Quality Management System.

Accountability 2: Manufacturing and Operations

  • Take responsibility for leading operation excellence and implementing streamlined manufacturing processes and management methods to generate higher returns on investment and workflow optimization in alignment with the company’s strategic plan.
  • Formulate and recommend manufacturing policies and programs that guide the organization in maintaining and improving its competitive position and the profitability of operations.
  • Develop the manufacturing plan and establish approved procedures for maintaining high standards of operations to ensure that products and complementary services conform to established customers and company quality standards.
  • Oversee contractors and the successful integration of operational improvement plans such as plant layout changes, installation of capital equipment, major equipment and building repairs, etc.
  • Accomplish financial objectives by forecast requirements, preparing annual budgets, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, initiating corrective actions.

Accountability 3: Supply Chain

  • Oversee company-wide procurement and logistics activities.
  • Take responsibility for the negotiations of major procurement contracts.
  • Oversee the purchase of raw materials at the minimal cost to meet annual budgetary plans.
  • Oversee inventory management and warehousing policies.
  • Be responsible for control of all products and materials in the warehouse.
  • Review the sales and production forecast/plan, and MPS and MRP outputs with the operations team.
  • Participate in risk management by identifying critical items/services and set priorities for alternate item/supplier searches.
  • Source new suppliers and materials and actively look for alternative suppliers for existing direct inventory items and QMS related services for better and lower costs.
  • Source new materials and suppliers to help support the R&D for new product development and assist other departments in sourcing required products and services.
  • Monitor producers and consumer price indexes (PPI & CPI) within Canada and the US and take them into account planning.

Accountability 4: Quality Control and Maintenance

  • Manage and direct quality control for incoming materials and intermediary and finished goods.
  • Be responsible for the management of all production and lab equipment calibration.
  • Take ultimate responsibility for all product labeling and date coding in compliance with all local, provincial, federal, and international applicable regulatory requirements; and,
  • Partner with the R&D team to set QC criteria for existing and new products.
  • Oversee all building and manufacturing equipment preventative maintenance, repair, and overhaul.

Accountability 5: Leadership and Employee Management

  • Lead by example the company philosophy of team-inspired-leadership by including team members within the organization in creative solutions while valuing the overall work of team members to achieve company goals.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills including outstanding communication, excellent decision-making skills, superior leadership of team members and more.
  • Lead the Operations and Production teams to high performance.
  • Set measurable KPIs for each area and employee.
  • Achieve optimum employee levels with the least amount of overhead.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, develop, mentor, and evaluate direct reports.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with employees while promoting development opportunities and performance appraisals.
  • Take corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy.
  • Delegate duties to appropriate team members with clear communication and goals outlined for successful completion.
  • Ensure that direct reports are trained in all aspects and responsibilities of the ISO/QMS system and assess the training requirements and the evaluation of the training for the Operations department.

Accountability 6: QSM/ISO and Safety

  • Create, adhere to, and improve upon all protocols, processes, and quality assurance measures relating to requirements set out in the company’s QMS/ISO and other corporate business practices.
  • Identify non-conformances, initiative and resolve NCRs and CARs.
  • Work with the QA team to ensure all product specifications for raw materials and packaging materials are up to date.
  • Adhere to all work safe requirements as applicable.
  • Oversee company-wide safety and the ultimate responsibility to make sure all policies and activities follow WorkSafe BC and all the applicable provincial and federal regulations.

Accountability 7: Continuous Improvement and Teamwork

  • Recommend and administer policies and procedures to enhance operations.
  • Participate in weekly and monthly department meetings and provide progress reports.
  • Prepare and provide daily, weekly, monthly, and annual reports upon request.
  • Participate as a team player focused on the success and well-being of the company; and
  • Participate in and conduct cross training activities as required.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned and required.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum education: Degree in Operations Management, Supply Chain, or similar. Bachelor of Science in Industrial, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering is preferred.
  • Professional Certifications: APICS CSCP and/or CPIM and/or Six Sigma belt is preferred.
  • Familiarity with GMP is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years senior level management experience in manufacturing and/or supply chain.
  • Must be proficient in supplier relationship management.
  • Must be familiar with quality management system. Familiarity with ISO 9001 is preferred.
  • Knowledge of ERP systems is a MUST. Familiarity with SAP is preferred.
  • Advanced computer skills in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Experience in consumer packaging goods industry is an asset.
  • Team player while being able to work independently.
  • Demonstrated initiative, follow-through, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage multiple projects.
  • Strong analytical skills. Familiarity with process analysis is an asset.
  • Self-directed, highly motivated, flexible, and reliable.
  • Must have accuracy, attention to detail, and proof-reading skills.

The ideal candidate will bring proven experience in an Operations role, along with demonstrated planning, organizing and leaderships skills. A solid understanding of the consumer packaging goods industry would be an asset.

The Operations Manager will have demonstrated experience creating the conditions to develop, unify and integrate cultures that support efficiencies, accountability and can lead cross functional teams for both short- and long-term projects. This individual will be looked upon to demonstrate initiative, follow-through, and problem-solving ability while having a strong analytical, attention to detail and an entrepreneurial mindset.
