This temporary, full-time position is available for the approximate period from November 21, 2022 to December 29, 2023. Regular hours of work are 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Occasional evening and weekend work is required, as well as travel between Douglas College’s campuses.

The Role

This job description is currently under review and will include additional managerial responsibilities within Student Affairs and Services.

Reporting to the Director, Student Affairs and Services, the Manager, Student Life collaborates, facilitates, and focuses on the goal to provide an enriched student experience on campus. The Manager ensures that Orientation, Transition, Wellness and Student Life programs provide opportunities for participation in activities and events to support, promote and sustain enrolment, campus life, and retention goals. The Manager is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the Student Life team and will manage (lead, organize, and administer) student life and volunteer programs, domestic and international orientation programming and activities that compliment students’ academic and career objectives at Douglas College. The Manager oversees the Student Life Coordinators, as well as the media, promotions and communications team that supports Student Life, and Student Affairs. The Manager will also initiate new programs and manage other areas of the department as assigned by the Director. The Manager will supervise staff, set goals, and establish implementation strategies for the department as assigned by the Director, Student Affairs and Services.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Director, Student Affairs and Services, the Manager, Student Lifeis accountable for the following:
  • Plan, develop, implement, and review activities, programs, courses, events, and services that support a dynamic and supportive campus environment that promotes learning, academic success, social and professional networking, and career achievement of students at Douglas College.
  • Promote and support Student Life (Orientation, Academic, and Wellness) events, initiatives and projects within the department, across the College, and with the external community by frequently liaising with each relevant stakeholder.
  • Plan, develop, implement, evaluate and oversee student leadership programs for Douglas College students.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in the delivery of student life activities to enhance the first-year experience of Douglas Students.
  • Collaborate with other areas within Student Affairs and Services to develop and deliver holistic wellness initiatives across the College (including physical, mental and sexual health).
  • Collaborate with faculties, departments and divisions across the College, to support and develop leadership and co-curricular learning opportunities for Douglas College students.
  • Ensure that student life activities are communicated effectively to students through various channels including on-campus messaging and social media.
  • Ensure the college’s risks are minimized and managed through established mitigation strategies for student activities and events
  • Promote and develop partnerships and relationships with internal and external groups, including but not limited to the Douglas Students’ Union, Departments of Recreation of the Cities of New Westminster and Coquitlam. Partner with universities/colleges, community organizations that enhance service learning, volunteerism, networking and community partnerships.
  • Plan and coordinate joint student activities with the other college stakeholders and the Douglas College Students’ Union.
  • Support the educational mission of the College and give strategic student life guidance to colleagues (faculties, departments, offices, etc.) throughout the College.
  • Recruit, supervise, coach, evaluate and provide leadership to direct reports and contractual services.
  • Hire, onboard, and supervise team by performing such things as: schedule, provide performance feedback, evaluate, suggest professional development and where necessary discipline direct reports and contracted employees.
  • Provide ongoing direction to department employees, student assistants and contract employees in relation to College priorities and projects.
  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Student Life team by applying consistent practice, optimizing workflow, and developing the team.
  • Plan, develop, and monitor program budget and expenses. Approve such things as, expenditures, timesheets and contact invoices, as required. Assume direct responsibility and signing authority and approve expenditures for the Student Life fund.
  • Participate in the preparation, development, implementation and evaluation of the Department’s strategic and operational plans, as well as risk management.
  • Chair or participate on assigned committees as required.
  • Act on behalf of the Director in their absence, as requested.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need
  • Post-graduate diploma or graduate degree in student affairs/student services or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • A minimum of three years demonstrated leadership and relevant management and supervisory experience, preferably in a unionized post-secondary educational institution.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in working with student groups, their activities and managing risk in this context. Demonstrated ability to model appropriate professional, ethical and collaborative behaviours that engender collaboration, trust and respect consistent with the responsibilities of this position.
  • Knowledge of the teaching and learning environment at a post-secondary level, or an equivalent combination of formal and informal teaching and administrative experience.
  • Experience responding to diverse student needs, including those of international students, Indigenous students, students with disabilities, and students who identify as LGBTQIA+.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of truth and reconciliation, decolonization and Indigenization within the post-secondary context.
  • Ability to establish priorities, organize, schedule and solve problems and tasks.
  • Ability to think critically, be decisive, and work collaboratively.
  • Excellent written, presentation and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and consensus-building skills.
