GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY


Reporting to the Director, Graphic Design, the position is accountable for art direction and management of a variety of graphic design projects related to corporative initiatives. The Manager will supervise a team of designers, either employees or external resources, and work in close conjunction with writers, clients, suppliers and other stakeholders inside and outside the company. Using knowledge in both digital media and print technologies, the Manager will proactively suggest appropriate courses of action in creating effective, impactful design solutions to communications challenges. He/she will assist in the direction and management of corporate design strategy, communications vehicles and corporate Brand standards.


SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES


1. Manage development of a wide range of effective graphic design strategies, plans and approaches in communicating corporate initiatives, activities and issues of interest to the corporation, which may be of a sensitive or confidential nature.


2. Assist or lead the planning and development of short- and long-term strategic communications by thinking, planning and critically assessing potential design and communications options to meet client briefings or corporate challenges.


3. Where possible, and according to sensitivity of the project, design communications solutions which meet senior management challenges.


4. Manage and art direct the graphic design and production of presentations, digital assets, promotional materials, publications, postal products and internal communications as required, including prioritizing staff workloads.


5. Work with a wide range of cross-functional teams and suppliers.


6. Ensure client and corporate objectives are met and overall quality standards, internal processes and corporate policies are followed and maintained.


7. Review the design elements of various communications vehicles and ensures compliance with corporate identity standards.


8. Contribute to the development of corporate graphic design policy, procedures and standards for national communications vehicles and activities.


9. Forecast, budget for and control expenditures in the operation of the design group.


10. Manage and evaluate assigned staff performance, job satisfaction, training, safety and working environment.


11. Share best practices and the identification of opportunities that will improve overall communications services.


12. Actively seek ways to improve customer and employee satisfaction.


13. Ensure technology being used by the group is being adequately maintained and data is backed up.


14. Coach team members to create a creative, positive work environment.


15. Assist in defining supplier contracts and monitors adherence by outside suppliers (printers, photographers, illustrators, graphic designers, etc.) Initiates action when services are not satisfactory.


JOB REQUIREMENTS


  • Graduation from an accredited graphic design institution

  • 8 yrs experience in graphic design environment

  • 3 years experience in a management role within graphic design environment

  • Project management experience

  • Technical duties include an excellent knowledge of:

  • Current professional Mac-based design, illustration, animation, UI and photo-manipulation software
  • Presentation and multimedia creation software
  • Corporate Identity and brand management fields
  • Cross-platform and cross-application conversion
  • Database, word processing, and use of internet tools
  • Working knowledge of Windows platform an asset
