Job Summary:

Reporting to the AVP Teaching and Learning Centre, the Learning Designer partners with faculty in course design for online, hybrid and classroom learning experiences. Working closely with faculty, the Learning Designer assists in the creation of engaging learning environments through the application of learning design theories, practice, and methods. The Learning Designer has a strong technical background and can assist faculty with digital resources, software, and applications. From assessing faculty requirements, the Learning Designer makes recommendations for learning activities, assessments, technological tools and resources that are appropriate for the course, learning outcomes, and student learning.

Duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Collaborating with faculty members, assists in the development of student-centered learning experiences and assessments for online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses
  • Leverages emerging educational technologies, universal design principles, and learning research to enhance the student learning experience
  • Through consultation, assists in the incorporation of indigenous ways of knowing into courses
  • Conducts outreach and follow up with faculty and departments
  • Develops strong working relationships with faculty and effectively accesses institutional resources
  • Using backwards design, assists in the planning and development of instructional materials, the user interface and multimedia
  • Provides one-on-one virtual or group coaching to assist faculty in increasing their knowledge and skill using the learning management system and other technological resources
  • Conducts online workshops on aspects of learning design
  • Reviews and make suggestions for enhancing the student experience
  • Conducts research and analysis on learners and contexts
  • Maintains project documentation
  • Assists in the equipment booking processes
  • Responds to requests for assistance regarding the learning management system
  • Assists other members of the TLC team as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in instructional design, educational technology or similar
  • Minimum three (3) years of directly related experience
  • Excellent knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models
  • Proven working experience in instructional design and with instructional technology
  • Understanding of decolonization, indigenization and reconciliation principles
  • Familiar with internationalization goals, methods and practices
  • Demonstrated experience in lesson and curriculum planning skills
  • Previous teaching experience preferred
  • Basic HTML and programming knowledge
  • Solid knowledge of course development software, open educational resources and learning management systems
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to successfully use technology particularly in the online environment
  • Knowledge and understanding of adult learning principles
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment
  • Ability to build successful relationships
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Takes initiative and works independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience managing multiple and competing priorities
