ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a passionate Land Based Learning Education Manager who is organized and looking for an enriching experience to be part of the new school team. The Land-Based Learning Education Manager will be responsible for assisting in facilitating the selection and implementation of a FMFN Culture and Land Based Education model. This individual must be able to interact with staff at all levels in a fast-paced environment, while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and efficient. This is a full-time contract position reporting directly to the Principal of Elsie Fabian School, located in Fort McKay, AB.


KEY RESPONSIBITIES

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assess students’ skills, abilities and learning requirements.
  • Coordinate Training and Professional Development for staff and Community in Land-Based activities.
  • Research and evaluate successful educational models used world-wide and present research and analysis to the Chief and Council and community of Fort McKay.
  • Provide leadership in all matters relating to Land-Based Learning education in Fort McKay First Nation.
  • Ensure that effective and appropriate educational programs are delivered to all students.
  • Incorporate land-based practices, protocols and the relationship to First Nation Peoples identities and ways of life into the school programming.
  • Work in collaboration with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members for the delivery of indoor as well as outdoor educational experiences at Fort McKay School, Moose Lake and other Learning Centers.
  • Assist teaching staff with the immersion of the lessons into the Alberta Curriculum.
  • Demonstrate effective organizational skills that result in compliance with all legal, Education Authority mandates and timelines.
  • Provide leadership for the development and review of a multi-year strategic plan for incorporating Land-Based Learning into the Curricular Outcomes, in accordance with FN Education Act and Education Authority Policy.
  • Ensure appropriate involvement of the Education Authority (approval of process and timelines, establishment of Education Authority priorities and outcomes, key results and final Education Authority approval).
  • Report regularly on results achieved and FMFN Education Program improvement plans.
  • Facilitate the planning, development, implementation, review and evaluation of Education Authority policies regarding Land-Based Learning.
  • Provide leadership in the planning, development, implementation, review and evaluation of administrative procedures.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relations with Education Authority.
  • Support Education Authority in performing its role and facilitates the implementation of its role as outlined in FMFN law.
  • Establish effective communication strategies to keep the FMFN Education Program informed of key monitoring reports, student, volunteer and staff successes, local issues and board decisions.
  • Ensure that open, transparent and positive internal and external communications are in place
  • Participate in community affairs in order to enhance and support the FMFN Education Program and promote public education.
  • Establish effective recognition programs and strategies to ensure that the internal and external audiences are aware of student, volunteer, staff and successes.
  • Implement different curricula based on grade level and school subject, choose textbooks and classroom materials.
  • Conduct training workshops for teachers prior to the school year starting to teach them how to implement the chosen curricula.
  • Monitor the teachers’ progress toward achieving educational goals.
  • Demonstrate positive and proactive leadership that has the support of the staff with whom the Education Manager works most closely.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Education with experience in Land-Based activities in a school setting
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Ability to work as part of an integrated team to achieve collective goals
  • Results-oriented, self-directed individual who takes initiative
  • Strong technical skills and proficient use of computer software packages including MS Word, Excel, Power Point, internet, database, and social media platforms
  • Extensive Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is considered an asset
  • Ability to speak, read and write Cree and/or Dene considered an asset
  • Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
  • Valid class 5 Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract required
  • Successful candidate will be required to live in (or relocate to) Fort McMurray, Alberta
