Junior/Intermediate Structural Engineer

(full-time permanent position)

As a Junior/Intermediate Structural Engineer, you will join our bridge and culvert engineering team to provide transportation engineering solutions to a variety of municipal clients. This role will involve complete delivery of bridge and culvert projects including planning, assessing, designing, approvals, tendering and construction administration.

What You Will Do

• Contribute as part of a team of design technicians and engineers-in-training, eventually transitioning into a managing role
• Mentor and support young staff in their career development, as well as receive mentoring and support for your own development
• Take leading design engineer roles for the following work:
• Bridge, culvert and retaining wall rehabilitation and replacement design including development and evaluation of multiple alternative designs
• Permitting and approvals from various government agencies, such as conservation authorities and provincial / federal agencies
• Hydrologic and Hydraulic analyses to support bridge and culvert replacements
• Visual structure inspections in accordance with the Ontario Structure Inspection Manual
• Load ratings on existing bridge structures
• Contract documents including form of tender and special provisions
• Quantity take-off and cost estimates
• Proposal writing
• Contract administration and/or construction inspection including review of shop drawings
• Support planning staff with Environmental Assessment work for transportation projects, with the opportunity to take larger roles in delivery of projects
• Assist with delivery of other structural projects supporting our Land Development, Linear or Water/Wastewater design teams, as required
  

What You Will Need

• Graduate of a civil engineering program or equivalent with a focus on structural engineering
• 0-8 years of experience in consulting engineering or a related field
• Licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, or ability to obtain a license within one year of hiring
• Knowledge of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA S6), the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario’s Structural Manual, Ontario Provincial Standards and applicable legislation around bridge and culvert replacement and rehabilitation
• Experience with administration of construction contracts and on-site construction inspection
• Strong organizational, oral, written communication and problem-solving skills
• Ability to objectively evaluate problems and opportunities and think outside the box
• Motivated to continuously learn and broaden their experience to enhance their engineering knowledge and qualifications
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, working knowledge of AutoCAD and finite element software
• Possess a valid driver’s licence
