The Phone Receptionist is responsible for providing exemplary customer service when

answering incoming calls and emails, reuniting lost pets with owners through lost and

found reports, providing information and assistance to the public, and while always

treating the public with the utmost respect and empathy. This position will assist Animal

Advisors as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provide knowledgeable answers to questions about WHS programs and animal

related customer inquiries.

2. Educate the public on pet related issues, alternative placement options,

relinquishment advice.

3. Enter information into database quickly and accurately.

4. Respond to voicemail messages and e-mail inquiries.

5. Prepare, search, and follow-up on lost and found reports.

6. Process surrender requests and maintain wait lists.

7. Schedule deliveries for WHS Food Bank program, arrange delivery route and

communicate tasks to volunteer delivery team.

8. Assist Animal Advisor with daily duties.

9. All other reasonable duties assigned by the manager Shelter Operations and

Capacity for Care.

1. Keeping the mission of the Winnipeg Humane Society in the forefront when

performing job duties, as well as when representing the Winnipeg Humane Society

both inside and outside of the shelter environment.

3. Communicate effectively with all departments, volunteers and customers.

4. Confidentiality is maintained on all matters pertaining to The WHS.

5. Exemplary level of care provided to all animals in accordance with The Winnipeg

Humane Society’s mission, policies, and practices.

6. Reliability and diligence in position.

Accountability:

Directly accountable to the Manager Shelter Operations and Capacity for Care. Must

be able to take direction from and work closely with Intake Supervisor and Assistant

Manager.

Authority:

Authority to perform all assigned duties and responsibilities within established policies

and procedures.

Interpersonal Relationships:

Regular, daily involvement with other WHS departments, volunteers, and customers.

Qualifications:

  • Exemplary customer service skills and experience working with the public without

judgment.

  • Ability to manage the emotional weight of dealing with the many animals

relinquished to the shelter.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of animal care, safety, & health issues
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Computer literate
  • Ability to work independently or as a team.

Education, Training & Experience:

1. High school diploma (or equivalent)

2. 1-2 years of customer service experience

3. Preference will be given to those with call center experience.

4. Experience working in a not-for-profit environment would be an asset.
