We have phenomenal opportunities available for you with our mining team as Heavy Equipment Operators (HEO). If you have no background or experience no worries – we will support you to get just that!

You will use your expertise to:

  • Participate in our Journey to Zero safety program by operating safely and driving to conditions
  • Follow our operating standards and procedures
  • Operate various makes and models of haul trucks
  • Complete walk-arounds, safety checks and field level risk assessments and ensure heavy equipment is running properly
  • Report any necessary repairs to the maintenance team or supervisors
  • Immediately report all incidents, damages and near misses
  • Communicate updates to your supervisor to ensure that you meet all goals and objectives

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Experience with operating equipment (haul trucks, wiggle wagons, dozers, graders, excavators) in industries such as mining, civil earthworks, pipelines, sawmills, pulp and paper mills or manufacturing, or highway construction (in your resume, please provide the type and size of the equipment you have operated and length of time of your employment with each company)
  • A High School Diploma (or equivalent) or 10+ years of related work experience
  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record (2 years)
  • A demonstrated safety mindset, extensive safety training and a best-in-class safety record

Preference for:

  • Experience in an open-pit mining environment
  • A heavy equipment operator ticket
  • Initiative to seek greater knowledge about systems, processes, and hazards in the working environment, to understand not just what you do but why you do it
  • The ability to address procedures if they are incorrect and zero tolerance for shortcuts, with a strong continuous improvement mindset
  • Motivation to check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions and the ability to anticipate potential problems

Don’t have any experience? No problem!

  • Candidates with no HEO or mining experience are still welcome to apply and may be selected to attend a 4-week training program at Keyano college
  • Tuition will be paid by Suncor
  • On successful completion of training, candidates may commence a paid coop training in the Base Plant Mine
  • You must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered:
    • A High School Diploma (or equivalent) or 10+ years of related work experience
    • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record (2 years)

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant Mine in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • This is not a camp-based role
  • Your must live within a 60 km radius of Fort McMurray
  • The shift schedule is a six days on / six days off rotation (three days on, three nights on, six days off; 12-hour shifts)
  • This position has been identified as safety sensitive
