POSITION TITLE:Global Citizenship Education (GCE) Specialist

POSITION TYPE:Full time (37.5h/week). Part-time schedule (0.7-0.8FTE) available, open to discussion.

Evening and weekend hours required to accommodate educator and youth engagement activities

Position Length: ASAP.15 March 2022 – 31 March 2023. Possibility of extension, grant dependent
SALARY:$55,000-65,000*, plus health and RSP benefits.

LOCATION: Edmonton, Alberta (required). Hybrid work or office available.

ANTICIPATED TRAVEL: 30% travel required within Alberta. International travel may be required (Covid-19 dependent) upon program extension

Background:

ACGC is a leader in building the capacity of teachers as educators for global citizenship, with the aim of equipping youth with the knowledge and ability to take action on key global issues. To carry on this objective, ACGC currently seeks a full-time Global Citizenship Education Specialist

The specialist will be responsible to guide and implement ACGC’s global citizenship education initiatives, with a specific focus on working with Alberta educators and K-12 students. The specialist will be a relationship builder - advancing and maintaining ACGC as a leader in global citizenship education within the province of Alberta. The specialist will develop new learning resources, as well as directly deliver learning opportunities to youth. As an emerging emphasis on arts-based approaches to youth engagement, the specialist will explore and develop this area of focus for the organization. Drawing on knowledge and experience in STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, the arts,and mathematics) education, the GCE specialist will develop strategies to leverage the content of the now finished 360 Video project www.insightproject.ca, to reach new audiences in new ways.

The specialist will work design ACGC’s new international youth experiential program using a global citizenship education framework, helping ensure the program applies participatory and rights-based community development approaches. The GCE specialist will play an active, hands-on role, as the staff responsible for youth learning and guidance, travelling and supervising the youth and any staff assisting with the program.

As an expert facilitator and education specialist, with a strong knowledge of provincial education system and curriculum, the specialist will help build the capacity of the international cooperation sector by informing strategy, policy, and initiatives to better implement participatory approaches and best practices in global citizenship education and public engagement, while engaging and providing input into Alberta’s new curriculum from a GCE perspective.


Primary Duty & Responsibilities

The GCE specialist will build capacity of Alberta educators towards global citizenship education by

  • Developing and implementing educator professional development opportunities in global citizenship education and international cooperation, including an ongoing teacher community of practice
  • Building and maintaining an outreach strategy to engage Alberta Educators, university education partners, school boards, unions, and other actors in global citizenship education, including responding to needs of teachers, connecting teachers with organizations, resources and information for implementing global citizenship education, and other needs as they arise.
  • Collecting and distributing tools and resources to promote global citizenship education in schools via ACGC’s Teach newsletter (5 times per school year)
  • Representing ACGC at Teacher’s conventions, including developing and conducting professional development workshops, and engaging educators in the exhibit hall or on the online platform when conventions are online.

The GCE specialist will build capacity of K-12 students towards global citizenship by

  • Design of curriculum-aligned youth resources/workshops, with a specific focus on STEM/STEAM based activities to educate towards gender equality and the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Develop a promotion strategy, and create opportunities to deliver classroom and youth-focused workshops/activities/opportunities in schools and other youth-serving settings
  • Design and deliver creative, remote engagement opportunities

The GCE specialist will build capacity of youth towards global citizenship by

  • Using a participatory approach, design the learning objectives and outcomes for ACGC’s new experiential youth program taking place across Alberta in May 2022.
  • Work with external partners to identify site visits and hands-on learning activities aligned to the program objectives, with a deep focus on learning about Alberta’s international cooperation sector.
  • Leading the design and implementation of Alberta-based activities for international experiential youth program, including workshops, pre-orientation and debriefing sessions. (Alberta Travel during the program in Spring 2022, depending on Covid-19 restrictions)

The GCE specialist will build capacity of the international cooperation sector in global citizenship education by:

  • Acting as the focal point for global citizenship education for the council, members and the Inter-Council network, by and providing expert guidance and input into sector-wide global citizenship education initiatives, and co-developing and leveraging programing where opportunity exists
  • Providing the perspective of the international cooperation sector into the Alberta curriculum development and roll-out.
  • Working with ACGC’s staff, members/partners to update ACGC’s Global Citizenship Education and public engagement strategies to reflect current theoretical frameworks and best practice
  • Guiding and informing ACGC public engagement approaches to ensure participatory and rights-based approaches are integrated and practiced.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • Strong theoretical understanding of critical global citizenship, social justice, and human rights education
  • Knowledge of, and commitment to, the international cooperation sector in Canada and globally;
  • Understanding of the Alberta education sector and Alberta provincial curriculum;
  • Strong aptitude for designing learning programs, lessons, and resources
  • Demonstrated understanding of participatory and human-right based approaches to community development;
  • Demonstrated understanding of intersectional, decolonial, anti-racist approaches to community development
  • Lived experience (lived/worked) in a low-income country
  • English mandatory; second language is an asset

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills

  • Highly creative, able to imagine and implement creative ways of engaging youth
  • Results-oriented: Strong project planning skills; ability to put policy into action
  • Facilitation: Strong facilitation, communication, working with teachers and youth
  • Youth Engagement: Demonstrated ability to work with K-12 age students; 18-24 age youth
  • Networking: Ability to build and maintain relationships in a network setting
  • Research/Writing: Strong research/writing skills
  • Design: Ability to create handouts and resources for workshop, and basic promotional material
  • Collaboration: Ability to work in a small organization, with a collaborative team environment in-person and remotely;
  • Flexibility: Demonstrated ability to be flexible and pivot based on needs of a small organization
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs; ability to climb ladder (for public engagement activities)

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following credentials:

  • Undergraduate degree and additional degree, including a Bachelor of Education or Masters of Education from a recognized institution;
  • Academic background in international development
  • Classroom experience as a licensed teacher
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working within/supporting the education system, international aid, or a combination of both
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Must provide a clean criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driving license

Position Details:

  • This position will report directly to ACGC’s Learning and Engagement Manager
  • ACGC provides a cost-shared mandatory health benefit package for positions longer than 1 year, and over 20-hours per week. ACGC offers flexible working hours through an averaging arrangement, with ability to accommodate hours of work between 0.7 – 1FTE (26 hours to 37.5) for the successful candidate.
  • ACGC offers set salaries. The salary of this position is currently under review and not available at the time of posting. The salary will be made available to shortlisted candidates.
  • This position may supervise youth and public engagement positions directly contributing to the program outcomes, depending on grant funding and program needs
  • This position is grant-funded. Increase in hours or extension of the contract is contingent on the availability of funding.
