Support Staff Full-time Revised Replacement Position - Repost

The Front-End Web Developer is accountable for the development of the College’s online courses. This includes transforming text-based course materials into innovative designs using the effective application of web development to create learning objects, interactive web pages, custom tools, etc. to be used in the College’s online course offerings.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with 2 days on-site at Conestoga College’s 3065 King St. Kitchener location, and 3 days remote.

Responsibilities

Course Development
  • Collaborates with project teams (e.g., instructional designers, curriculum developers, creative services, quality assurance specialists, etc.) to develop quality online courses
  • Develops and maintains web-based learning objects to support the College’s online course offerings (e.g., games, interactive web components, etc.)
  • Develops instructional content into Conestoga’s chosen Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Communicates regularly with members of the project team, providing development updates, coordinating meetings, etc.
  • Developing accessible solutions that comply with AODA requirements
  • Follows the Online Learning Centre’s (OLC) quality assurance practices to support the integrity of Conestoga’s online courses
  • Develops and maintains a custom interactives asset library
  • Supports faculty and the OLC with video production and captioning activities and/or audio recording which could include liaising with work study students and an external service
  • Troubleshoots issues with the use of the LMS related to custom interactives and multimedia
  • Investigates and shares new ideas with respect to multimedia learning activities
  • Manipulates, sources, and maintains course graphics as needed
Designs Custom Course Tools
  • Designs for the integration and implementation of mobile applications using Brightspace APIs
  • Creates and designs custom LMS interfaces and widgets to support user experience
  • Creates course and widget templates for scaled distribution that support LMS usability and quality course design
  • Develops and creates new concepts, strategies or innovations that support and improve the overall user experience
Training and Consultation
  • Provides technical onboarding to new OLC staff and student employees
  • Produces training material for new developers including written documentation and video guides
  • Develops written documentation around development processes, developer standards, and custom interactive documentation
  • Conducts eConestoga consultations with instructional designers and curriculum developers
Technical Support
  • Responds to inquiries and provides learning technologies support via email, phone, virtual, and in-person
  • Assists with LMS integrations including testing functionality and providing documented feedback
  • Troubleshoots issues with the use of Brightspace and report issues using the Brightspace support portal if necessary
  • Directs and assists instructors with the implementation and effective application of multimedia, learning objects and other educational technologies to enhance courses
  • Providing LMS and eLearning software technical support
Qualifications
  • Three-year Diploma/Degree in Web Development, Information Technology, Computer Science, Math, Multimedia, Graphic Design, Online Learning, Education, Business, or Arts
  • Five years of experience in the Educational Technology, Online Learning, Learning and Development, Web Development, or IT field
  • Some administrative use of a content or learning management system and familiarity with APIs; Developing rich user experiences on the web, preferably for post-secondary education
  • Advanced knowledge and experience building custom tools using APIs
  • Strong technical skills including HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, front-end frameworks, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.
  • Experience creating web page designs that are responsive on various mobile devices
  • Experience incorporating technology and media to enhance web content and improve the user experience
  • Experience working in an agile development process, prioritizing, and managing development tasks, as well as implementation within content or learning management systems
  • Proven skill working with subject matter experts, preferably faculty in higher education
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Expected to remain technically current with the tools and applications as well as with emerging web and instructional technologies
