If you require accommodations during the recruitment process, please notify HR at any time.Position Summary:Reporting to the Senior Conservation Biologist – Freshwater Ecology, the Fish Passage Biologist will help develop a program in Atlantic Canada to remediate fish passage at a variety of barrier types (e.g., dams, stream crossings, dykes). Work will initially be focused in Nova Scotia and PEI. The position will also assist with the delivery of this program nationally. The biologist will be responsible for working with local partners to identify candidate barriers and supporting them in implementing barrier remediation projects. Work will be guided by CWF’s watershed connectivity remediation planning process. The biologist will work with a team of conservation planners, spatial analysts, data managers, policy advocates, and communications staff at CWF to promote and implement fish passage remediation.Job Responsibilities:
  • Identify candidate barriers for remediation and collect data on associated biological and physical parameters.
  • Conduct field assessments of barriers, associated habitats, and fish habitat potential.
  • Manage remediation projects, including obtaining permits, managing design and construction contracts, conducting field verifications, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with and support Indigenous organizations, community stewardship groups, scientists, government officials, industry and other NGOs to share information, develop contacts, and promote partnerships.
  • Identify funding sources for restoration of aquatic connectivity. Provide support to development staff in preparing funding proposals.
  • Assist with other Conservation Department tasks or tasks from other departments as needed.
  • Design and carry out effectiveness monitoring of fish passage
  • Lead and support research on the movement and habitat use of migratory fish species in Atlantic Canada
  • Provide expert review and comment on projects that impact fish passage.
QualificationsNecessary
  • Requires minimum Bachelor’s degree with relevant 3-5 years of work experience in related fields (Biology, Environmental Science). Master’s degree is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience managing the implementation of aquatic restoration projects, including project identification, scoping, implementation, and reporting.
  • Experience working in Atlantic Canada, especially Nova Scotia
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships within the organization and with partners.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to work both independently and on a team.
  • Strong knowledge of freshwater ecology, particularly fish and stream ecology.
  • Strong English written and oral communication skills, and demonstrated experience writing professional reports or peer-reviewed publications.
Additional Assets
  • Conservation planning and prioritization experience, including facilitating planning workshops.
  • Professional experience working for or in partnership with Indigenous organizations.
  • Knowledge of various standard and emerging fish passage remediation techniques.
  • Experience with environmental engineering, stream hydrogeomorphology, and with interpreting engineering designs for stream restoration projects
  • Experience with standard fish identification and sampling techniques (e.g., electrofishing, minnow traps).
  • Experience reviewing and synthesizing scientific literature, reports, and online databases
  • Experience with permitting and authorization processes under the Fisheries Act coupled with one or more provincial regulatory framework.
  • Management of large-scale spatial data (GIS, database management).
  • French written and oral communication skills.
  • Fluency in Indigenous Language(s).

  • Full-time, 3-year fixed-term position.
  • Typically working 37.5 hours per week. Occasional overtime may be required.
  • Location: Preference will be given to candidates residing in Nova Scotia or willing to relocate at own expense.
