Lewkowich Engineering Associates Ltd. (LEA) is a professional engineering services firm, established locally in 1994. LEA provides geotechnical engineering, materials testing, and hazardous building materials testing services to Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, and the surrounding Gulf Islands, with offices in Nanaimo and Courtenay. We employ a full-time team of thirty-five, including administration staff, industrial hygienists, environmental scientists, certified technicians, technologists, and Professional Engineers and Geoscientists.

Who You Are

We are looking for an experienced Financial Controller to join our established team and take ownership of the financial side of our business. We need someone who can handle not just the financial and managerial accounting but someone who will take initiative to improve what we do. We want someone to put systems in place and be an active part of increasing the efficiency and profitability of the company. This includes training and mentoring staff.

You are a driven, detail-oriented individual. You are a proactive person, but also someone who can react efficiently and effectively to manage problems. You are willing and able to work as a leader in a team environment, and step outside of your role if required to problem solve and implement solutions

You will be based out of our Nanaimo office, working closely with the owners and key staff of the firm and will have the autonomy to implement systems and manage a team. You will be a key member of the leadership team and will be expected to help drive the company forward with your thoughts and expertise. Key Qualifications

Professional accounting designation (CPA).

5+ years’ experience in a professional accounting role, ideally in an engineering environment.

Advanced financial acumen including understanding of common accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, etc.). Experience with Deltek Vision is an asset.

Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with ability to build custom financial reports/tools.

Advanced understanding of Canadian financial and managerial accounting best practices.

Can analyse and explain detailed financial information.

Ability to manage around tight deadlines and still get the details right.

Proficient in financial design including budgeting, cashflow forecasting, dashboards, and job costing.

Must be fluent in written and spoken English.

Key Duties

Oversee and execute full-cycle accounting functions and payroll.

Monitor AP/AR activity and investigate/reconcile discrepancies on accounts.

Prepare various financial reports (e.g., budgets, cashflow forecasts, monthly statements, etc.).

Conduct analysis and make recommendations on company financial performance.

Monitor insurance, cash balances, mortgages, and planning of capital expenditures.

Ensure all accounting and financial records are up to date and backed up according to CRA requirements.

Prepare GST, PST, and other required tax compliance filings and remittances in a timely manner.

Design, document, train, and implement financial systems, processes, and procedures.

Liaise with external accountants, banks, insurance, etc.

Train and mentor office staff.

Support with hiring and onboarding of new staff.

What We Offer

Competitive wage of $90,000 to $120,000 depending on experience.

This is a permanent, full-time position, offering a 40-hour work week, and a Monday to Friday schedule.
