Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Social Justice, Seniors, and Housing, the Drop-in Center Support Worker provides a range of front-line support services to the clients. The Drop-in Center Support Worker is part of a team whose mandate is to ensure the drop-in centre remains a respectful, secure, safe, clean and supportive place in which to reside, visit and work.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support and encouragement to clients through developing trusting relationships, recognizing individual strengths and supporting clients in their healthy development, success and well being.
  • Collaborate with clients in developing their self-determined goals, create a case plan and provide assistance in connecting clients with community resources and supports.
  • Promote linkages and partnership development with local service providers to ensure optimal service delivery to clients (e.g., Fraser Health Authority, Aboriginal Services, Community Corrections Offices, homeless shelters and transition houses, employment service organizations and referral agencies, etc.).
  • Promote and champion a culture of learning and respect within the staff team, program and services.
  • Assist with conflict and crisis de-escalation as needed.
  • Perform health and safety checks of the facility, clients, and premises.
  • Promote a harm reduction approach to addiction, mental and physical health and well-being.
  • Promote positive and inclusive client-staff relations.
  • Maintain accurate records of individual case plans, activity updates and other documentation for reporting purposes.
  • Participate in mandatory Archway Community Services training and staff meetings as directed by the Program Manager.
  • Additional tasks and responsibilities as determined by the Manager.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certification:

  • Satisfactory criminal records check must be provided and maintained
  • Post-secondary education in the human services field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered
  • First Aid Certificate required

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in de-escalation and crises management
  • Experience working with people with substance abuse and homeless, vulnerable populations
  • At least three years relevant experience is preferred.
  • Two to three years of recent experience in an outreach capacity is an asset

Knowledge and Skill Set

  • Strong knowledge of client centered approach and an understanding of the issues related to mental health, drug and alcohol addiction, correctional institutionalization, reintegration, homelessness and poverty.
  • Strong verbal, written and active listening skills; able to communicate effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
  • A flexible nature, and the ability to adapt to constantly changing situations.
  • Demonstrated ability, commitment and compassion to work effectively and cooperatively with diverse populations.
  • Effective crises de-escalation and dispute resolution skills along with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to take direction, work with minimal supervision, and work alongside and cooperatively with others.
  • Able to interact effectively and positively with Archway staff, residents, community partners and stakeholders.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The Drop-in Center operates 24/7, 365 days a year. Required shift availability includes: 7:00am- 3:00pm, 3:00pm-11:00pm, and 11:00pm-7:00am.
  • This position may experience frequent interruptions and requires a strong ability to switch tasks.
  • This position may interact with difficult people or people in difficult situations or may be placed in situations of conflict where clients become rude or unpleasant.
  • This position has a high-level of social interaction and engagement, requiring adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols.
  • Due to client vulnerability during in-person services, a complete COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended for this position.
