Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture, environment and related life and social science disciplines, the Faculty of Agriculture educates future leaders and generates knowledge and innovative solutions for healthy, sustainable societies. Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, the Director, FAFU will oversee the international finance, administrative and risk management functions for Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Agriculture and Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University ( FAFU ) International College (IC), ensuring that the IC contributes both to the academic and cultural experience for each learner as well as upholding the reputation and financial stability of the Faculty of Agriculture and Dalhousie University in the international higher education arena.Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare financial reports, statements, and other data for the IC’s inclusion in Faculty of Agriculture financial statements, and to meet Dalhousie and government reporting requirements. Work with internal and external parties to ensure proper accounting for international financial transactions.
  • Support the Dean’s office regarding strategic planning and project management, serving as a lead and advisor in the areas of finance/budget, human resources, information technology and compliance assurance. Provide regular reports regarding gaps, issues, and opportunities.
  • Monitor, update and regularly report on a wide range of potential risks, and advise the Dean’s Office and other relevant stakeholders regarding risk management and courses of action. Lead the maintenance and regular updating of controls and action plans in consultation with key stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with offices at FAFU in China to ensure the requirements of Dalhousie, FAFU and the Chinese government are met. Ensure compliance with the cooperation agreement, Charter, and relevant policies, plans, and university regulations both long-term and in IC’s day to day operations.
  • Provide international support for Dalhousie faculty and staff for all aspects of traveling to and working in China. This includes pre-travel education and continued support regarding Chinese income tax obligations, China’s legal system, and required IT/cyber security protocols while in China. Create and regularly update “Working in China” protocol.
  • Work with Faculty and FAFU administration to ensure all teaching requirements are met or exceeded. Work with Department Chairs of any faculty members who will be travelling to ensure that their domestic teaching, research and service obligations are covered or adjusted as appropriate.
NoteThis position will require periodic scheduled international travel and may require emergency international travel on very short notice.The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Business Administration as well as a Chartered Professional accountant designation and significant experience working in an international environment/office (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Strong cross-cultural skills with significant diplomacy and tact.
  • Effective relationship-building, interpersonal and communication (verbal, written and presentation) skills with all levels.
  • Excellent judgment, initiative, and problem solving and organizational skills while working in dynamic environments with the need for rapid response.
Assets
  • Undergraduate degree in International Business.
  • Accounting designation specializing in international finance.
  • Experience working in an international environment that required collaboration with China.
  • Experience working in higher education setting.
  • Chinese language skills.
  • International accounting experience, particularly experience related to international employment.
