Compost School Assistant - Indigenous Peoples Summer Student Opportunity 4 Months

Share your passion for soil stewardship and waste reduction. The City of Edmonton is looking for a motivated student to educate residents about the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and composting.

“Learn to build soil and grow food using common household waste". Learn Edmonton’s solid waste management practices. Teach proper disposal techniques and alternatives to the public. Lead public programs on waste diversion through composting and grasscycling. As a Compost Educator, you will learn many composting methods and put that knowledge to work for Compost ‘S Cool.

Activities include:

  • Learn and understand about Edmonton’s waste system and how to reduce waste
  • Learn the science of composting and soil building, and know how to apply these in various methods
  • Engage, present, and teach residents about home composting and compost methods
  • Host and maintain Compost School; including growing plants, maintaining landscape; and self-directed work
  • Maintain numerous compost methods including Bokashi and Vermiculture
  • Maintain and evaluate composting at community gardens and demonstration sites
  • Write and edit digital content about home composting, Edmonton’s waste system, and reducing waste
  • Recommend changes to improve programming
  • Provide authoritative guidance to volunteers
  • Assist staff in other areas of waste programming as needed
Qualifications :
  • Friendly, approachable, and positive
  • Knowledge of composting methods with a keen interest in gardening and soil
  • Enthusiasm about environmental initiatives
  • Exceptional public speaking and communication skills; social marketing skills are an asset
  • Demonstrated ability using Google Suite Applications, and social media
  • Physically fit; Ability to lift up to 20 kg and willing to work in adverse weather conditions
  • Work in a safe manner, with due care and caution
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers License
  • Successful candidate must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business.
  • Have CSA Approved safety footwear
  • Work location is at Compost School

NOTE:

  • Hired candidates must meet the eligibility requirements of the funder:
    • Currently enrolled and returning to school or a Post -Secondary Institution in the fall
    • Applicants must be Métis, First Nation or Inuit
    • New hires will be required to register with our identified funding partners

Hours of Work:40 Hours per week, Sunday-Thursday (including holidays). Evening and weekend work is required.
