The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development is responsible for stewardship of Provincial Crown land and natural resources, and oversees a land base of 94.8 million hectares in British Columbia. The Terrestrial Wildlife Resources Section manages terrestrial wildlife populations and the ecosystems and habitats that support them in the South Coast region of B.C. This includes setting landscape-scale population and habitat objectives, assessing these objectives via field inventory and monitoring, and applying the results of these assessments to land-use decisions, species at risk recovery actions, and sustainable harvest allocation. The success of this work relies on meaningful engagement and collaboration with First Nations, and consultation with stakeholders such as forestry licensees.

Specific responsibilities of this role will depend on evolving regional priorities. Key workplan items that currently need additional staff resources include:

• Implementation of population recovery actions for the Northern Spotted Owl, a Critically Imperiled species at risk in B.C. This includes strategic control of Barred Owls and an adaptive monitoring program to prepare for the release of the first captive-bred Spotted Owls in North America.
• In partnership with a consortium of 15 First Nations, completion of systematic conservation planning to identify and protect sites that benefit the greatest number of species at risk and indigenous values within Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.
• Reviewing and collating wildlife habitat models into an interactive web-based tool to assess overlaps and protection statuses of mature- and old-forest dependent species (Northern Goshawk, Marbled Murrelet, Roosevelt Elk, and Black-tailed Deer) to optimize future amounts and distribution of Wildlife Habitat Areas and Ungulate Winter Range.
  

You will have strong technical skills, including field experience in remote settings, species-specific expertise, GIS modeling and mapping, and the ability to apply your analytical and scientific writing skills to range of issues. You will have strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, including the ability to understand and implement organizational goals and objectives.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education, experience and professional designation requirement as outlined below:

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in biological sciences or a related field.
• Minimum four years of related experience (or an M.Sc. with 2 years experience, or a Ph.D. with 1 year experience), including field-based biological sampling, analysis and reporting, and providing advice within a regulatory regime.
• Registered (or eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment.
• Experience assessing and monitoring natural resources.
  

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

• Experience leading staff in project or field settings.
• Experience interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policy.
• Experience working with First Nations on complex resource management issues.
• Experience in the design and analysis of complex ecological studies, including statistical modelling and GIS mapping using cutting-edge methods and tools.

Please include your registration number with the College of Applied Biology (CAB) within your application, as you must be registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with CAB. If you are not yet registered with the CAB, please explain how you are immediately eligible (i.e. currently a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) member in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction and can immediately transfer to the CAB).

You must be registered (or immediately eligible for registration) as a Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the BC College of Applied Biology. Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction. Applicants must confirm their eligibility with the CAB. Confirmation of registration/eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be made.
