About Start Me Up Niagara

Start Me Up Niagara’s Resource Drop-In Centre is home to a dedicated team who strive to provide encouragement, support, and assist with the immediate needs of person’s struggling with significant life challenges. Many of these adversities include: mental illness, addiction, homelessness, and poverty. Participants visit the Resource Centre to access basic needs, connect with workers, and get referrals to other community resources.

Position Summary:

The Art Facilitator is responsible for conducting the Art Me Up program within the Resource Drop-In Centre. Their role is to support and facilitate artists in realizing their artistic goals. This position will also be responsible supervising volunteers and compiling statistical, program and evaluative program information and collaborating with Centre staff concerning individual participants. The Art Facilitator is supervised by the
Resource Development Manager (RDM).

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and present art activities in a non-judgmental, non-directive and supportive manner, adapting to the individual needs of the participants
  • Provide necessary art materials for participants, maintaining security of inventory
  • Establish clear rules and limits for participation, maintaining a safe space for artists to optimize their creative journeys
  • Coordinate workshops with visiting artists in drama/sound and drumming
  • Initiate and maintain ongoing communication with appropriate staff
  • Coordinate a group exhibition of “Mapping Our Journeys II”, prior to March 31st 2022
  • Supervise volunteers and artists on site and be available to provide support
  • Call the Centre Team Lead, staff or Resource Development Manager immediately if there is a problem
  • Attend staff meetings and service trainings, as they arise
  • Communicate with Resource Development Manager to provide program update and assessment of staff and volunteer needs
  • Assist with grant reporting by maintaining appropriate statistics and data. Some report writing may be required.
  • Provide RDM and others with appropriate communications regarding artists and exhibition for social media and advertising
  • Pursue appropriate community resources for individual artists as requested

Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities & Skills

  • Must have art facilitation experience in a group setting.
  • Background in visual arts/ fine arts and/ or practicing artist.
  • Highly responsible, compassionate to and knowledgeable of the issues regarding homelessness and mental health & addictions issues, respectful of cultural diversity, able to communicate positively, able to set clear limits, multi-tasker, strong organizational skills.
