JOB TITLE :Analyst 2
DEPARTMENT & SECTION : Human DNA (Paternity/Immigration DNA & Forensic DNA)
LOCATION : 335 Laird Rd., Guelph

DESCRIPTION:

Performs procedures related to DNA analysis specifically sampling FTA, FTA purification , PCR amplification, capillary electrophoresis and analysis in order to obtain human DNA profiles (STR genotypes) for paternity and immigration casework. Drafts reports including the use of specific computer software and population databases for the calculation of paternity/maternity indices or other familial relationships. Provides court testimony for the above, as required. Participates in development/validation of new instrumentation/new DNA systems/procedures, as required.
Performs all procedures related to DNA analysis including sampling of all types of comparison samples, DNA extraction of comparison and unknown samples (FTA, organic conventional and differential), quantification, PCR amplification, gel/capillary electrophoresis and analysis generating human DNA profiles (STR genotypes) for forensic casework. Participates in validation of new DNA systems/procedures/instrumentation, as required. Provides court testimony as required.

  • Using appropriate sampling techniques, processes FTA samples through all the steps of the DNA analytical procedure (purification, amplification, capillary electrophoresis and analysis) to generate DNA profiles suitable for interpretation.
  • Using appropriate item/sample handling procedures, processes samples through all the steps of the applicable DNA analytical procedures (extraction [FTA, organic conventional and differential], quantification, amplification, gel/capillary electrophoresis and analysis) to generate DNA profiles suitable for interpretation for forensic casework.
  • Depending on seniority and experience, may be responsible for processing bone, teeth, fixed tissues for DNA analysis.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed notes of all testing performed; maintains continuity and integrity of casework materials to prevent mislabeling, item/sample mix up, contamination, loss or degradation.
  • Using in-house programs, creates printouts of statistical significance for each required comparison.
  • Drafts paternity and immigration reports for reporting/review by reporting scientists.
  • Organizes work and co-ordinates with others within the Department to meet TATs for paternity and immigration casework.
  • Prepares reagents and supplies (e.g. autoclaving, etc).
  • Ensures adequate reagents and laboratory supplies are available by monitoring quantities and submitting purchasing requests.
  • Utilizes instruments and laboratory equipment and keeps in good working condition.
  • Follows good housekeeping practices for laboratory areas and own office area.
  • Reviews scientific literature and other relevant publications to maintain current knowledge in the field. Attends conferences/workshops as appropriate.
  • Reviews and recommends revisions of SOPs, WIs and forms.
  • As required will assist in training of junior staff.
  • Participates as required in the development/validation of new procedures and/or instrumentation.
  • If required, provides testimony in court about laboratory procedures and protocols conducted in the case under investigation.
  • Verifies and maintains the continuity and integrity of casework materials by keeping accurate and detailed documentation, and performing proper item handling procedures to prevent mislabeling, tampering, contamination, loss or alteration
  • Complies with BV Labs’ quality system, and the accreditation requirements of relevant accrediting bodies (i.e. Standards Council of Canada) by following the Quality Manual for the Department, all relevant SOPs and WIs and using and accurately completing all forms related to the required duties.
  • Other support duties (such as lab clean up and generator testing) as required.

QUALIFICATIONS [Minimum Requirements]:

  • A Biological Technician Diploma (or similar technical course related to the area of lab analysis) from an approved College.
  • Specialized knowledge and experience with all DNA analytical procedures (eg. PCR set up) and instrumentation (thermal cyclers, capillary electrophoresis) and the accompanying software programs (Data Collection).
  • Sound knowledge of sample handling procedures to ensure continuity and integrity of samples through compliance with laboratory procedures and quality assurance protocols.
  • Knowledge of and experience with laboratory Occupational Health and Safety practices in order to handle hazardous materials by taking the necessary precautions.
  • Excellent manual dexterity, record keeping, calculations and problem solving, detail oriented and organized.
  • Coordinates and communicates well with others in Animal DNA Department to achieve above duties.
  • Requirement to be flexible to accommodate changing priorities.
  • Independent worker for routine procedures following established SOPs and WIs but knows when to seek assistance on non-routine analyses from supervisor, other staff or external contacts. Will participate in finding solution to any problems encountered.
  • Confident, honest and thoughtful in communications.

This position requires full vaccination status as per RCMP requirements.
