Summary Of Position

The Ag. Technician is responsible for the accurate collection and reporting of data with regards to the determination and quantification of pests, diseases, weeds and other crop abiotic stresses including water and nutrients on Valley Farm fields for the purpose of validating reports. The Ag. Technician is also responsible for the collection of various samples including potato, diseases, and pest, plant and soil samples throughout the growing season.

This individual must be comfortable and willing to work by themselves in an outdoor and field envirnonment for long hours often in difficult weather conditions. Some heavy lifting is required. Long hours could be required during peak seasons.

Summary Of Qualifications

• Ability to learn how to detect and identify all relevant potato pests and diseases including but not limited to: PVY, Late Blight, Early Blight, Weeds (identification of major weeds for the region), Colorado Potato Beetles, Aphids;
• Knowledge in data collection and reporting
• Self-starter, good interpersonal skills (talking, writing, reasoning). Knowledge of computers, GPS, Smart phone technology is considered an asset.
  

Essential Duties And Responsibilities Include The Following.

Under the direction of VF Manager & VF Field Rep, the Ag. Technician will participate in all spring, summer and fall agronomy activities.

• Perform seed size cutting profiles
• Crop scouting activities
• Measure planter performance
• Measurement of plant stand and spacing
• Identification and quantification off all plant pests, diseases and weeds
• Sampling for soil moisture and plant nutrient levels
• Collection of yield information
• Collection of all trial digs
• Grading trials for data interpretation
• Accurate reporting of the data using geo-localization
• Reporting of discrepancies in crop
  

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty in a satisfactory manner. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Individual must regularly lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Education And/or Experience

Beneficial qualifications include extensive knowledge of potato pest, diseases and weeds. Experience in field work or scouting. Candidate must have excellent communication skills are necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse and telephone keyboard and talk or hear.

Requires visual acuity to focus on desktop and/or laptop computer screen.

Requires standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time, talking and listening.

Work demands may fluctuate seasonally related to farming cycles, especially during planting and harvesting.
