The Children, Youth and Families portfolio, within the Edmonton Addiction and Mental Health Service, strives to provide client-focused, high quality mental health and addictions services. If you are an addiction counsellor with experience working with children and youth with mental health and/or substance abuse concerns, this may be a great opportunity for you to advance your career. Reporting to the Care Manager, Children, Youth and Families, Addiction and Mental Health at Rutherford, the Addiction Counsellor III is responsible for conducting intakes; completing detailed assessments, writing assessment and attendance letters; creating treatment plans; providing individual and family counselling; and facilitating psycho-educational support, experiential and process groups. The counsellor may be required to facilitate or co-facilitate active and creative leisure sessions. Consultation with families, as well as allied and community professionals is essential in order to facilitate treatment and the aftercare process. Services are delivered in community based settings. This position works in a team environment which may include community collaboration, consultation and programming. The counsellor will provide services from a Recovery orientated, family centered framework, addressing the needs across the continuum of care. Please note that this position works a modified schedule that includes evening hours to accommodate groups. Community Clinics are open week days; however, these hours may expand to weekends in the future.

Description:

As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will provide quality, client focused, recovery based and culturally appropriate assessment, treatment, case management, crisis intervention, education and referral services for clients and their families; as well as community stabilization services. You will develop and implement treatment plans and provide a range of interventions which offer least intrusive and most appropriate services to clients and their families. You will also monitor and evaluate client progress and achievement of recovery goals and adapt treatment as needed. As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will depend on your excellent relationship building skills with clients, families, government staff and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Addictions or a combination of a bachelor’s degree in a related field with course work in addictions. A related degree combined with a diploma related to addictions, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, may be considered. Individuals eligible for registration under the Health Professions Act must maintain active registration. Individuals may require authorization/permission under regulation to perform restricted psychosocial interventions and/or restricted activities.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in a health related discipline is required. Social Work Diploma/experience or above. 3-5 years of experience with the focus on children, youth and their families, preferably in a community mental health setting. 2-3 years experience facilitating groups in an addiction or mental health setting. Experience in using a family centered, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused approach is essential. Knowledge and training in adolescent development theories, models of addiction, group process, crisis management (suicide risk assessment) and the psychological and physiological impact of substance use/abuse and process addictions is required. Proficiency with computers, including MS Office Suite. Current CPR certification. Non Violent Crisis Intervention Training. Excellent interpersonal skills and well developed written and verbal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Registration in a professional regulatory body as defined by the Health Professions Act is preferred. Connect Care experience is preferred.
