The Brain Injury Association of Durham Region (BIAD) is a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by brain injuries. We provide a range of support services, resources, and education to promote independence, community integration, and overall well-being. Our Adult Day Program offers a safe and stimulating environment for individuals with brain injuries to engage in meaningful activities, socialize, and enhance their cognitive and physical abilities.

Job Description:

The Brain Injury Association of Durham Region is seeking compassionate and dedicated individuals to join our team as Day Service Facilitator. As a member of our team, you will play a crucial role in creating a supportive and inclusive environment for adults with brain injuries. You will assist participants in accessing and engaging in various day service programs, facilitate group discussions, and promote a sense of belonging and empowerment.

Responsibilities, include but are not limited to:

  • Facilitation: Engage participants in a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, physical exercises, cognitive exercises, and recreational activities. Foster a welcoming and supportive atmosphere that encourages social interaction and personal growth among participants.
  • Program Planning & Implementation: Collaborate with the day service team lead and other staff members to plan and implement weekly and seasonal activity schedules. Monitor participants’ well-being and respond to their individual needs and preferences.
  • Assessments and Planning: Conduct assessments to identify the needs, preferences, and abilities of individuals. Develop individualized plans and goals in collaboration with clients and support teams.
  • Safety: Promote and implement safety protocols and emergency procedures to ensure the well-being and security of individuals. Handle crisis situations calmly and efficiently, following established protocols.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of individual progress, attendance, and incidents. Provide regular updates to the day service team lead.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Foster effective communication and collaboration with clients, support teams, and external service providers. Ensure that relevant information is shared, and feedback is received and addressed promptly. Maintain confidentiality and respect the privacy of clients, services, and BIAD.
  • Other: Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

  • A genuine interest in working with individuals with brain injuries and a passion for improving their quality of life.
  • Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., recreation and leisure, recreation therapy, rehabilitation, social work, psychology).
  • Previous experience working in a similar role or with individuals with disabilities, acquired brain injuries, dementia, addictions, and/or mental health is preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with participants, families, and staff.
  • Patience, empathy, and a non-judgmental approach towards individuals with varying abilities and needs.
  • Knowledge of brain injury and its impact on cognitive, emotional, and physical functioning is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Clear vulnerable sector police check (required before starting employment).
  • Reliable transportation to commute to our program location.
