POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

Client related work in our Emergency Residential Women’s Shelter through: Crisis Support, Emotional Support, Psycho-Educational Sessions and by providing information, referrals, and support. We are looking for someone with confidence, strong interpersonal and communication skills, conflict management skills as well as completion of High School and some/completion of University or College.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Degree/diploma in Human Services, augmented by experience in the areas of family violence, crisis intervention, group facilitation, and community development.

- Demonstrated decision-making, interviewing and assessment skills, written and oral communication skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES INCLUDE (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):

- Develop supportive relationships by applying helping skills within a crisis intervention and domestic violence framework.

- Confidential, empathetic, and non-judgmental services are provided to educate women of their alternatives and facilitate appropriate choices to individual needs.

- Provide support to clients through our 24-hour Crisis Line

- Promptly and accurately document information pertaining to crisis calls on the appropriate forms and phone logs.

- Assess, upon intake, the immediate physical, emotional, and medical needs of the client and children, and when necessary to make referrals to medical, police and/or child protection services.

- Assessing the client’s resources, support and emotional needs, and utilize this information to formulate goals and action plans.

- Making and facilitating appropriate referrals to community agencies to meet client’s social, health, emotional, and economic needs.

- Advocating on behalf of clients in their development of linkages to community resources.

- Clearly and concisely document pertinent observations regarding behaviours, emotional presentation, significant factors, application of action plans and goal attainment.

- Facilitate women’s groups as a means of intervention and education.

- Provide on call assistance to CIW staff on duty, as needed on a rotating basis.

- Assisting with meal preparation and clean up duties.

- Participate as an effective team member with all staff members, volunteers, and board members by participating in scheduled supervision and staff meetings, participating in fundraising events, remaining up-to-date with current knowledge and skills in pertinent areas, and completing assigned projects on time.

- Network with community resources to maintain positive inter-agency relationships while gaining understanding of their service mandates and promoting shelter services.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:

Preferred Human Services background, Social Work Diploma/Degree or equivalent.

Must have a minimum of 2 -4 years experience working with vulnerable populations.

Previous Domestic Violence education/background, ability to provide Trauma Informed Services to families and experience in completing Danger Assessments and Safety Planning are assets.

Previous experience as a Crisis Intervention Worker is an asset.

Harm Reduction and Trauma Informed Care knowledge and understanding is an asset.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (& Driver’s Abstract)

Standard First Aid & CPR Certificate
