The Innovation Asset Collective (“IAC”) is a membership based registered not-for-profit organization with the mandate of assisting Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the data-driven clean technology (DDCT) sector to leverage intellectual property (IP) to compete and scale. Specifically, IAC’s core program offering for member companies (“Members”) includes assembling promising portfolios of patents to secure freedom to operate; providing Members with IP education and support in building their IP strategy to drive revenue growth through ownership of market differentiating innovation; granting funds to Members in support of implementing their IP strategy; and providing Members with access to IAC’s market and patent research to inform strategic decisions. The goal for IAC is for Canadian cleantech SMEs is to be capable of maximizing the value of their intangible assets to succeed in Canada and beyond.

IAC is funded through a Contribution from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) to support innovation and the protection of Canadian IP.

Position Summary

Reporting to Program Manager - Education & Strategy, the Copywriter will support the content creation area of the Education & Strategy Team.

This role will work with subject matter experts (in IP, Data, and adjacent subjects) to write and edit scripts and other written content for proprietary IAC learning materials, including courses, whitepapers, workshops, and toolkit assets. The incumbent will use IAC learning principles to create course outlines and learning objectives, and guide subject matter experts through the scripting process.

The role will coordinate research efforts, including reviewing student applications, prioritizing research efforts, and assigning tasks to the team.

Reports to: Program Manager, Education and Strategy

Key Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Program Manager and VP, Education & Strategy, and working together with key partners and internal operations streams:

1. Writing & Strategic Thinking: (75%)

  • Create email communications, event descriptions, course descriptions and more.
  • Work cross-functionally to develop course outlines and measurable learning objectives for IAC learning material.
  • Write scripts in common language for technical learning materials by leveraging in-house SME expertise.
  • Edit scripts supplied by external SMEs to apply the IAC eLearning principles and organizational voice.
  • Lead and support brainstorming sessions with E&S team leveraging whiteboarding tools

2. Research & Research Coordination (20%)

  • Coordinate research students and assign tasks to them
  • Research as required to support learning material creation and special projects

3. Participate and work on Special Projects as required by the IAC executive team. (5%)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written English.
  • Strategic thinking.
  • Fearless with regards to technology; strong Zoom and MS Office (Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, Planner) capability.
  • Self-starter.
  • Tenacity to get the job done.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Able to juggle multiple priorities successfully.
  • Sound judgement and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Able to build trust with people from different communities & backgrounds.
  • Bilingual (French/English) is desirable or Working understanding in French.

Required education and experience

  • University or College Degree in a relevant discipline preferred; equivalent education and work experience would be considered.
  • 1-2 years of copywriting experience (technical preferred)
  • 1-2 years of experience in project coordination.
  • 1-2 years of eLearning or adult learning & development experience; Adult Learning & Development certificate considered an asset
  • Experience supporting event planning / workshop facilitation an asset.
  • Public/Government/Start-up experience desirable.

Position details

This is a contract position until March 31, 2023, with the potential for extension or renewal.
