Job Description

Syl Apps Youth Centre is a secure youth mental health facility in Oakville. Syl Apps operates two programs: (1) Secure treatment (mandated by the Child & Family Services Act—CFSA) (males and females); (2) It is also the only facility in Ontario designated to accept youth by order of the Ontario Review Board. We are committed to providing a range of services and a high standard of care for young people and their families.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Unit Supervisor, the Control Officer acts as the information hub for Syl Apps Youth Centre and provides reception services (including after hours). In addition, the Control Officer will be responsible for operating the security systems for the building and responding to emergency and fire alarms.

This position is covered by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) Local 213 group. Internal applicants will be considered first.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Maintain safety and security by conducting testing of emergency and safety systems including equipments (i.e. personal sensors, CCTV System and two-way radio).
  • Monitor the use of keys through an established key control system.
  • Notify the Program Coordinator and support team on shift of any medical, operational (i.e. fire and disturbances) and emergency situations.
  • Issue keys, fobs, walkie-talkies and mechanical restraints when required.
  • Receive visitors such as lawyers, probation officers, CAS Workers, resident’s families, volunteers.
  • Check and monitor all resident community passes, ensure forms are completed. Update pass data base.
  • Co-ordinate courtyard, gym, enclosure, auditorium and weight room bookings for Unit activities.
  • Receive, sign and return for safekeeping, resident’s monies after business hours, complete daily resident count sheets.

Qualifications:
  • Law and Security diploma or related diploma.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C are required.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in maintaining safety and security within a youth justice/residential treatment setting.
  • Familiar with various security monitoring systems and alarms (i.e. C. Cure, CCTV and Pal System).
  • Strong written/oral communication and presentation skills; interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • Excellent time management, organizational and self-planning skills.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic; superior professionalism; reliability and a commitment to providing outstanding customer service.
  • Proven ability for sound decision-making, good judgment, discretion and initiative.
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license will be considered an asset.

Kinark Child and Family Services conditions of employment include but are not limited to successful Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening, completed Pre-Employment Medical certificate, and proof of full vaccination against COVID-19.Proof of vaccination for each vaccine dose received is required.
