The Communications Specialist supports both Community Services (Calgary) and the Divisional Public Relations Department by developing and designing requested communication material, social media management, and general communication support as required. This position requires occasional travel locally and within the Division.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Writing & Communications
  • Conduct story research and interviews, write web stories, and obtain supporting photos.
  • Develop relationships throughout the Division to source story and content ideas.
  • Write copy for on and offline collateral.
  • Make recommendations based on correct brand identity and marketing needs for collateral requests and proposals.
  • Assist in the development of communication materials as directed.
  • Act as photographer/videographer at events and activities as needed.
  • Participate as directed and as needed at all PR events.

Design & Creativity

  • Provide creative and graphic design expertise and support to online and offline communications initiatives and events.
  • Create innovative and high-quality design, artwork, and layout for on and offline communications materials such as brochures, newsletters, presentations, posters, signage, web graphics, web pages, print ads, etc.
  • Ensure that all communications materials and promotional items adhere to Salvation Army branding and imaging standards.
  • Maintain the photo and video library.
  • Research into new technology, software, etc. as needed.

Website/Social Media

  • Monitor and analyze website traffic and analytics.
  • Monitor social media of all Divisional Units and reports potential issues or ways to help.
  • Content creation and management of all social media platforms for CSC and with the team for PR.
  • Identify content to be shared Divisionally.
  • Provide social media statistics and website analytics quarterly for marketing purposes.
  • Evaluate new social media platforms and provides recommendations.
  • Take photos/videos and capture content for social media posts.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: you may be required to provide educational documentation.

Education/Certifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design, or related field.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years related experience.

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Strong proficiency with Adobe Creative Suites – Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher.
  • Exceptional written communications skills.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Video and video editing skills are an asset.
  • Strong team player who can also work independently.
  • Creative problem solver, idea generator, and multi-tasker.
  • Demonstrates a positive outlook, effective teambuilding, and interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Knowledge of Salvation Army policies, procedures, culture, and programs is an asset.
  • High standard of integrity, judgment, and confidentiality.
  • Able to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and satisfactory driver’s abstract, as well as access to a personal vehicle for business purposes.

Successful candidates, prior to/after hiring, may be required to provide or complete:

  • Background check consent.
  • A satisfactory Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search.
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.

DAYS and HOURS of work:

Monday to Friday, generally 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with 30 minutes of paid break and 30 minutes of unpaid break time. Some public relations work will occur outside of normal hours.
